As a pianist, I had to share this with you. Quite a woman.

I thought the disparity between her recollection of life with her son in Dachau, and her son's recollection was poignant.

She saw the mother:child relationship as being the most crucial human experience.

Apparently she agonised over this period, and how to satisfactorily answer her son's questions: "Where is Daddy? Why don't we have enough to eat?"

And her son remembered the experience as "not that bad", and didn't remember going hungry. A friend comments that this is because she always gave him the food and took little for herself.

Lived to be 110. Worth a listen, chaps.

Fascinating program. I was also pleased to hear the bit about Mavis Gallant. Thanks.

Yes, when in season. Also, there is 'Great Lives', currently presented by erstwhile [gay] Tory MP, Matthew Parris. His story is also brilliant, though in a different way. (Told by him, he was the parliamentary sketch writer for The Times.)

Parris worked himself up to it, then 'came out' to the House. He had briefed fellow press and politicians, and was apparently expecting a royal s*** storm. Nothing happened. Nothing.

But he never held a cabinet post, which for a bright Tory is unsurprising, to be fair...
