This could be very serious. Ukraine is vulnerable and Russia has walked in the back door. To complicate matters, Crimea itself is a land divided between an ethnic Russians majority and ethnic Ukrainian and Tatar minorities.
So far the international response has consistent but neither diplomatically nor militarily very strong. So what next?

Serious indeed. I'd prefer to see them work it out among themselves. The US has spent enough time, money and lives fighting other peoples' wars without any thanks from anyone. Let the UN deal with it. Kerry should continue on to Lebanon Tuesday and stay out of Ukraine.
I have a feeling this thread will be short lived.

I think I had never really heard of Crimea until a week or so ago. Certainly never gave it much thought.
Location of Crimea (red) with respect to Ukraine (white).

No, not that I recall.

I think if Russia goes no further than Crimea, nothing much will happen (especially as Crimea has an ethnic Russian majority that seems to generally be in support of Russia's actions). Some negotiated agreement will come about. I read that Putin has been relatively silent publicly on the issue (of course he is still no doubt controlling things). It has been the other Russian politicians who have been doing (most of) the talking. I read a theory that this is because Putin may be staying - publicly - above the fray, in order to come in as a peace maker down the road. I'm curious if the markets will react at all tomorrow, or in the next few days.

Do you think sending Kerry is handling it correctly? I do not. He should stay away. We are not the world's peacekeeper. It's a Russia/Ukraine/Crimea problem. Let them or the UN work it out. My opinion.

To be fair, I was confused by your comment too Lobo. I didn't know how to take it. That said, It's still a UN problem, not ours.

If it helps, I thought Lobo was taking a shot at the UN. Slightly unfair, but hardly out-of-bounds.

I completely agree with you about the UN being incompetent. It's about time the rest of the world recognizes that. Still, I'm totally against any intervention by the US, including Kerry's visit. Let the UN take the heat for a change by proving their incompetence.

This is *very* distressing to me. I've been visiting/working in Ukraine since 1998 and have always loved being there.

It seems like a Northern Ireland situation, where the majority of people in the region are actually pro-Russia. That's just what I've gathered from the news reports and I am really not well-versed in international politics.
