What was the name of the figure that Paul Winchell had made, then decided not to use - right before Jerry was made by Frank Marshall.
This figure looks very similar to Jerry but was made by a different artist, earlier on.

You're probably referring to the figure that Paul made himself, before he bought an 'off the shelf' figure from Marshall (which was called "Nosey" in Marshall's catalogue).
Paul called that original home made figure Jerry Mahoney as well. That original figure made by Winch actually turned up for sale in an auction about three years ago. It didn't sell back then...have you seen it re-listed? Is it the same one in the picture attached here (if I am able to uploaded it) Click here to view attached image.

This is the figure. It's not Jerry but it's extremely close. I was told this was the predecessor.

I'm surprised it didn't sell, given it's history. Was the minimum bid (or reserve) just set too high?

I am thinking that's the Marshall "Nosey" that Winchell used before he created the newer Jerry, with which we are all familiar. He called this guy Jerry Mahoney also. This is almost certainly a Marshall stock figure. They are so close in appearance because Paul based the more famous version on the Marshall version. If I'm wrong about this, I pretty sure somebody will correct me, but that's the story as I understand it.

David, You might be right. I don't remember the name of the original, it was cast from, but the name was short.
Except that I was told it was cast off a hand-carved figure. So, was the Marshall figure made with plastic wood layered over plastic or fiberglass interior? PG, The high bid was only 375. At that price it might as well sit on the Flying Carpet, up on the loft, wearing a turban. It looks pretty good up there and it freaks-out a few occasional visitors who look up to see those eyes staring at them from the inky shadows.

Well, I'm stumped Jay. I don't know about Marshall ever using anything but a duplicarver to make a duplicate. Dan Willinger could probably give you a better answer. PM Marshalldoll.

I'm no expert, but plastic wood over plastic or fiberglass doesn't sound right for a Marshall...

The Marshall"Nosey" that Winch used extensively in the early part of his TV career is in the Smithsonian collection (I don't think it is currently on display, at least it wasn't on display last time I was there).. Winch made a few copies of Jerry himself. Other than the wooden one he mainly used on TV, I've seen three and did some work on two of them (one was fiberglass, the other was Plastic Wood). The Jerry figure that Winch used prior to the one he obtained from Frank Marshall is the figure in the picture that I attached to my earlier post.

Thanks for clearing that up Alan. I'm glad to hear he's in the Smithsonian. I was stumped by the fiberglass and plastic wood. I had no idea Winchell had made replicas from any materials other than wood, and I did think Marshall had worked pretty much exclusively in wood. So, maybe it's a Winchell duplicate? Interesting.

But he definitely did make liberal use of Plastic Wood for filling in slips of the chisel and sometimes for securing things on the inside of the head (as well as filling in splits in the wood when figures came back to him for epairs or touch-ups). Over the years I've worked on dozens of Marshall figures and it was rare that I didn't spot at least some Plastic Wood somewhere on or inside of the head. It was very versatile stuff and when used properly, could be more durable than the wood itself. As you may know, both the original Mortimer Snerd and the original Howdy Doody (among countless other puppets) were made completely of the stuff. Alas...it is no longer available (commercially, anyway) in it's original form.

I asked about this vent recently.
Does this look like Jerry? I was browsing Youtube and found this. Does his figure remind you of someone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3SVMBifN-w Harris reader, righter & researcher Harris Deutsch aka dr laugh drlaugh4u@gmail.com music, magic and marvelous toys http://magician.org/member/drlaugh4u
