Dr. and the Medics version was a cover of the hit written and originally recorded by Norman Greenbaum in 1969, who himself has sometimes been called a one-hit wonder (even though he did have some other recordings that charted).

Here's the original, one of my favorites to this day:

That's true!

They always stand out in my mind as having their only hit with a cover.

Yes, I know, I'm classy. Smile

The Grateful Dead

As I understand it, this is the ONLY Grateful Dead song to ever hit the top 10.
"There's no time to lose," I heard her say.
"Catch your dreams before they slip away."
"Dying all the time, lose your dreams and you could lose your mind.
Ain't life unkind?"

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums.

Remember this? One of the funnier novelty songs of the early sixties by one-hit wonders, The Devotions. It's the Doo Wop classic Rip Van Winkle:

Hey, Bob... Not only do I remember that one, I also remember that the 45's flip side was the same song in reverse! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-lJZiqZaGA&feature=kp (about half way through)

I sure wouldn't call J Giles a one hit wonder.

I never knew that Michael! That's hilarious! I was about eighteen when the song came out and the first time I heard it I laughed my arse off. Never even thought about the reverse side. You made my day with that. Smile

I actually remember that one Bob; I remember liking it too. Here's one for you that goes back further to 1958 when I was eleven. Sheb Wooley's Purple People Eater

I had "Purple People Eater" when it first came out. But Sheb Wooley had more than a few hits. He recorded some hysterically funny stuff as his alter-ego, Ben Colder, including a really funny version of "Hello Walls."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuL0giSO8f0

As Sheb Wooley he was also an actor- a semi-regular on Rawhide as well as roles in High Noon and The Outlaw Josey Wales.
