I think it's a private business and can set whatever rules they want. It'll be up to them if those rules help or hurt their business.
While a first time warning might be a better way to go, I can see why they have this particular rule and it certainly makes a lot more sense than suspending a kid for pointing his finger like a gun. |

The child should have known better. She was already two years old. She was lucky to get off with only three days suspicion. Should have expelled the defiant little criminal.

Give a simple explanation, if needed. Send a note or call the parents. Explain what happened... maybe give a warning if merited. But a suspension??? These are morons, plain and simple.

I'd pull my kid out of the effing place. I wouldn't want any child of mine learning about life from these nincompoops.

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I think the suspension was meant to punish the parents. Did the parents still have to pay for those 3 days their child was suspended?
I completely understand the rule, and the enforcement of it. The rules are made very clear to the parents right from the beginning, and so are the consequences if they should be broken. Why do some parents only complain that the consequences are too harsh after they break a rule, and not before hand? That is what seems unreasonable to me.

In any sane world, you take the sandwich away and tell the parents why, as Michael said. Suspension is idiotic, but probably a good thing if it gets the parents to move their child to a better place. Unfortunately there are often constraints of time, money, and alternatives when it comes to daycare.

I was just wondering:
1. Was there a sign with the rule written in English? 2. Are both parents required to sign the acknowledgement of the rules at enrollment? 3. Are the penalties described in the enrollment papers? 4. Are the penalties described in the monthly reminder? 5. Has this family been warned about this before? 6. Since the father didn't see the sandwich until the teacher took it away from the girl, and since the teacher saw it when the girl got two steps inside the door, the father may not have checked to make sure the girl had all of her stuff with her that she'd need for the day. 7. And, in light of that above statement, I bet they're all glad it wasn't a gun. And, finally, #8, Why is this international news? |

If there were a student there who was allergic to grilled cheese sandwiches and had to be rushed to the hospital, I have no doubt that there are NVMSers (and jurors) who would support making the day care center pay the family's medical bills at least, and probably a lot more. In light of that, I have no problem with the center adopting strong measures when dealing with a parent who was apparently oblivious to both the rule AND the fact that his 2-year-old was walking around with a sandwich. How did it become international news? Probably the same father found a journalist and complained: "It was only a sandwich! What's the big deal?" Which is exactly the sort of attitude that may lead to the school being sued in the future. Three days of making (and paying for) other arrangements might lead to the parent trying a little bit harder to ensure that the rules are followed.

Geeze, it's come to illegal cheese. We're toast. Make that grilled.

As someone who has had a child in daycare I can tell you this: 1. Any reputable daycare carries insurance. Much much much more likely that a kid will get a) a communicable disease from another kid or b) a bite, hit, or clunk on the head from another kid or c) slip and fall and sustain injuries or d) get pee'd on by a fellow toddler. 2. The sandwich was taken from the kid at the door. So they had some sort of checking mechanism in place. 3. The Second Amendment gives babies the right to bear cheese sandwiches. America.

So, now we are comparing two year old toddlers to terrorists??? This just added fuel to my original statement.

I was assuming he meant both of us. I almost addded "or a hand grenade" but wanted to stay within the realm of possibilities. I agree with your three statements, but not being a flyer, I didn't know peanuts were banned from planes.
