I think what's in the video looks like handling. I prefer to look for methods that permit the outward appearance of a performance to register as magical rather than sleight of hand manipulation - clever hiding.

I performed for a guy yesterday who appreciated my coin roll far more than my magic. I was just performing with friends, so I spent a while teaching him it and performing multiple down's palm productions etc. He never worked out where I was hiding them, but he enjoyed watching it and appreciating the skill involved. (rather less skill than was actually involved with any of his explanations!)

Anyway, the point is, he would have appreciated stuff like this more than say vanishing with a raven, as you can see the skill involved. I wouldn't perform this on a general audience, but there are laymen who appreciate this kind of stuff too. I know many people who prefer Penn and Teller to other magicians because they "honestly deceive".

I really enjoyed watching - I'll show it to some friends and see their opinions.

That's exactly the problem - they can see the skill involved. in the variety arts the juggler gets a better reaction than the magical manipulator. the ventriloquist may do better than both. does that mean you want to add some vent work to your coin routines?

Manipulation is akin to contact juggling. Not magical so much as skillful. Can be artistic though. See Michael moschens work for example

I also loved it! I understand what Jonathan is trying to say. There is just music playing. The coin is doing amazing things. Now, if you told "a tale of enchantment", a REASON why the coin does what it does, and take the spectator into the temporary world of make-believe, acting "The Wizard", it becomes "Magical"!

Does this make sense? Smile

Right on... performance takes it from clever to entertaining and clever, i.e., magical.

It still has to be deceptive to move the item from clever or skillful into astonishing. "Magic" as explanation is distinct from astonishing. If a vanish method works in performance they just don't know where it went but they are sure it's not in your hand(s) anymore. Not hidden. Not in the other hand. Just the experience of a hole in their model where the coin was.

I've watched that video of the one-hand coin vanish a number of times, and I fail to see how this looks like manipulation any more than any other vanish. Laymen don't believe that magicians can actually vanish a coin. They know it must go somewhere. If it's magical looking enough, they give up and go with the flow. That one-hand vanish looks quite magical to me. I know the coin is hidden somewhere, but where does it go? The only problem might be with angles.
