I received an interesting call today. A gentleman called who works for the local
airport. He's looking to hire me to do strolling magic in the terminal for several
hours each Friday evening. We're meeting later in the week to talk about his
needs and about a couple of "hurdles". Anybody done anything like this in
the past?

I haven't, but Imm thinking of people in the airport terminal. If it were me, I'd probably set up a small table and entertain the people who came to me.

A few of the Detroit guys, including Karrell Fox, used to "work the lines" in Frankenmuth, Michigan. There were a couple "chicken dinner" restaurants" that had people lined up for an hour or longer waiting to eat.I haven't heard anything recently, but I would assume this job continuess.....
For this type of work, "EYE CANDY" material is most appropriate. Everything must work in your hands, and is casrried in your pockets. If it's a family group, entertain the KIDS, and you'll make the parents happy! Effects that require NO reset are needed. All the usual criteria for this situation apply. I would imagine that airport lines would be a somewhat similar situation. Of course, confer with the client. He may have 'different ideas", but working the lines has become a fairly standard thing.

This sounds interesting. Once you get some more information, I would love to hear more about it. I work for TSA, so I'm curious about which airport, and if you would be performing before or after the security checkpoint.

One thing that comes to mind is the fact that lines are moving. If you start to perform for a group that is standing in line and you thereby hold up the line, I think you´ll get into trouble.
My background: Loved magic for 25 years, always wanted to do paid gigs but never had the courage. Faced my fears some years ago and went pro.

As I understand it, TSA rules do not allow NON-passengers past the security checkpoint. I would check into that first. If, by chance they DO let you perform past security, you will want to evaluate all of the props you use (which should be minimal) to be sure they would not violate TSA rules (scissors, knives, etc).

Employees are allowed past security (those folks that run the shops in the terminal)so if it is past security you have to ensure they make proper arrangements.
Many airports today have a USO for military and their dependents. These would be ideal place for magic as most have tables, and families congregate there as they await flights. While I'm not saying to do you're whole time there, if the airport has one, it would be a great stop to make during your time strolling.

I'll let you guys know more after my meeting. He mentioned the TSA so I think
he wants me in the actual terminal after security. This I think is one of the hurdles. I already have a short list prepared of questionable effects to stay away from.

That's awesome!
This is something I always thought about doing, performing magic at the airport. I'm excited to find out how things turn out for you. |

Got stranded coming home on the red eye from Vegas once. Stayed awake all night performing for folks in line. A few got together and bought me breakfast in the morning, and one guy somehow got me bumped to first class.

So, I met with my contact at the airport. he hired me for a couple of weeks to work from 5 to 8. I'll be there for the flight that leaves for Vegas on a Friday. he also is considering having me there for the noon hour flights. We'll discuss that later. Regarding TSA...I have to have an escort with me at all times because I'm in the terminal area. No biggie...he'll be doing some marketing questions while I do magic. I'll keep you guys updated as it goes along.

Sounds like a cool gig. I picked my son up from at the airport in Columbus Oh. (when he flew home from Japan on leave from the Navy) and there was a Baggage employee doing some card stuff for a couple co-workers and some random people waiting at the baggage claim to pick up passengers. I am sure it wasn't a "regular gig" but the people seemed to enjoy it while passing the time waiting.

Leave the butterfly knife for card stab and the bang gun at home.
Seriously, and interesting idea, but it should be well thought out first.

In the terminal. The seating area where passengers wait to board the plane.
Also will be doing line work while they wait to get their tickets or boarding passes. The client wants the ticket line worked, so I assume he will smooth it over with the airlines. He mentioned the counter staff by name, so he obviously knows the people at each airline counter. I'll let you know how it goes this Friday.

Dick: I grew up near Frankenmuth, but have never seen a magician working the lines. Too bad...that would have been great for me as a young, budding magician back then!
Motown: They both still ARE great chicken places...I try to get there at least once a year. Still like to go to Bronner's as well...America's CHRISTmas Wonderland! Quote: On Mar 15, 2014, motown wrote:
