It all depends on the performer's image and persona, really. For some, vests are the way to go. For others, not a chance. (Cris Angel in a vest? Totally does not fit his image.) They do offer some extra pocket space, but there are other options, depending on your routine. (Suspenders, for example.)
Styles change. Surely you've noticed that very few performers even wear the one article of clothing most iconically associated with magicians to this very day? (The black top hat, of course.)

I bought an Old Western style gambling vest because I've been invited to Old West gambling themed events. That one's not a stretch. I ended up really liking the vest and so does my girlfriend. I don't care about anyone but Ms. Bitts thinking I'm sexy, though I do have a few other female friends who melt for vests. Maybe it's a regional thing?

When I was a little kid I wanted to wear a vest because these guys were cool.

Buried near end of OPs post was dig against bow ties.
Recently I have learned how to tie a bow tie and have started wearing them. I get tons of compliments and is often a great conversation starter. The trick is that it took me time to feel comfortable in them. So when I first wore them I was a dork because I felt like a dork. Now I'm cool because I feel cool. It's all about attitude, not clothes.

Being hip means reading magazines a lot. All of the hip outfits I wore as a young man look really stupid today, and make any of those old photos sort of embarrassing.
It is possible to create a look that seems cutting edge, but freezes you in a certain era in a few years. Doug Henning was sort of trapped with the Fu Manchu look of the Godspell era because he was so famous and recognizable in it. |

Two things. I do not do magic to get women to sleep with me. And I love vests - a three piece suit is far sharper than torn jeans and a dirty t-shirt for example. I also love cravats and snappy hats.
My next purchase will probably ensure no woman will ever look at me again, but that is not the point. I have ordered a kilt.

You know women who don't like kilts? Definitely must be regional...

Just for gits and shiggles I wore a vest and a kilt this evening. Received quite a few compliments. Regional.

I never understood why the English call a vest a waistcoat. I know a few fat guys whose vests don't even reach their waists!

Because they're wearing their vest underneath their waistcoat!! Much like the way that we wear our pants inside of our trousers.....

Equally, hoods are what the Ku Klux Klan wear, and they do not pertain to automative matters either. I hope this has cleared a few things up for you, Bob. My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |
