Are we becoming like card magicians and their trick decks; one for forcing, one for Card to Pocket, one for a vanishing card, one for a "kiss" trick, etc, etc?
And who is the Fanny Pack Guy? Check out the latest installment at http://ModernCoinMagic.com/

Aren't you working on the assumption that people who use the specialised gaffs you mention, just pull one out after another? That's quite a thought.
For the mere mortals, who do not do sets of purely coin magic, we might do just one thing with coins. You really do seem to have a bee in your bonnet about it all. I took a look at that 'Illusion Coins' that someone mentioned. That did not look good at all, I admit. |

No, no axe to grind here.
I LOVE gaffs. And I use them regularly. I just think that many magicians are so taken by their gimmicks that they sacrifice the magic. We should focus on being magical and not just putting on a parade of props.

Excellent point Ben. I'm CERTAINLY more well versed with a deck than coins. When I use gaffs at any point, the most important thing for me is can I do more than one thing with it, and can it (at some point) be examined. If I can either start or end clean, or at some point they FEEL as if they've examined everything...or could have if they wanted to. Nothing more satisfying than starting with spectator shuffled deck, add a gimmick, perform a miracle, ditch the gaff, leave deck on the table as you walk away.

Mr Salinas I was thinking the same thing a while ago. It seems that magic as we used to know is changing. Since it has become a large business industry, everyday we see marketed effects that include only one gimmick for one effect. Are they worth buying? I don't know. But these are the rules of the market. People must spend their money.
In a short amount of time, people like us who studied, performed and developed the classics, will considered as old-school magicians. And I don't have any problem with this. I may not be able to perform a super clean 4 coin vanish using an "exotic" gimmick but as far as I'm concerned my exp [ does a great job in every lay person. i keep my magic simple, practical and pointed to entertain my audience. So, yes we becoming like most of card magicians. But there are also some great card guys out there who don't need an one way deck to force a card!!

I started off with cards, so the image of the guy with the bum-bag [fanny pack] full of gaffed decks is pretty horrible...!
What attracted me to study coin magic was the visual nature of it; and although I started off just looking at pure sleight of hand, I quickly saw the effectiveness of combining that with gaffs for the most magical looking effects. To replicate what can be done with a TT, for example, requires a lot of holding out. Even in the most wonderful hands, palms and grips are still restrictive, and if you are holding out two silver dollars, for instance, that is going to inhibit movements. The judicious use of gaffs enables us to obey more closely that famous professorial imperative: "Be natural!" As David said, it depends on how you get into it and how you get out of it. All my little coin routines end clean: either everything vanishes, or what remains is ungaffed. How about naming some fantastic tricks that don't use any gaffs or extra coins? Al Schneider's Matrix springs to mind: four regular cards + four regular coins = total magic. |

Ben, while I understand your point, you also need to address in your comments the person that likes magic, me as an example, and does not have the time or the willingness needed to perform a coin trick with just sleight of hands, some sleights are very difficult to master without a lot of hours of practice and gimmick coins help a lot in those cases.
I do agree with your fanny pack analogy, there must be transparent to the onlooker that you are switching coins if not it will look as you describe a gimmick parade. For that, I would agree that the more versatile gimmick coin should be used more often to avoid going back for a different coin, in my case I tried to do most of the tricks with a TUC and depending what I would like to do later maybe another type of coin, but with a different kind of trick in between to hide the exchange of coins. |

Packet tricks from wallets vs working from a deck of cards.
some folks carried a suitcase full of those wallet things. Pick six tricks worth performing... ?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Yea I used to Run the Close-up night At the magic club in town! And was always looking For new people! Some on the magic club boys had not seen yet! And there was a new guy in town that was already working 2 restaurants in town! I had not got to see him Work yet! But hay he was a working Pro! SOOO The show was starting at 8:00 P.M. And he came in at 8:15 ! But hay there is always Some club Business to take care before the show starts So I said Ok! so he comes in with a briefcase And said " Where do you want Me? " Now he takes a char and turns it around and sets his briefcase On the Char And opens it up so Everyone could see into it! And you saw around 20 or so decks or cards all lined up in a row! And each one had a label On it Saying what it was! And A ton of Little Packet tricks All in those little wallet's ! All Labeled Saying what there where!
But it It did not stop with just cards! There where around 15-20 or so of those little Coin envelopes each with a set of coins in it! So he started his set! And ran his Finger down the stack of Decks And said " Yea ok this is a good one! " Took it out and did it Badly!!! Then put it away! And said " yea this one is good too! And did it Then put it away! So now he is going to do Mac Donald's So he takes out one of those Little Packet trick Wallet's with 12 cards and 4 aces in it to do it! Agen ! SOOO now he is going to do a coin trick--- So he looks down the long row of Coin Envelopes Said yea this is a good one, And takes it out And does it! Needless to say I NEVER Had him do anything Agen!!! So they Also don't let Friends become the briefcase Guy!!! As I have always said It About WHEN!!! How do you get INTO IT! And How do you get OUT of it! And this is noting new It has Been around for EVER!!! And After a Quick opener. Why do you think When I take out my coin purse For The 1 St. time when I am working for Layman I take one coin out And start doing a coin roll, Then a 2 coin then a 3 coin! It just said to them " hay this guy is good he does not need the trick stuff you get at the magic Shop! " And them I take a 4 Th coin with a shell on it And blow them away!!! Ok so that's My 2 cents!! |

OK, I get it. But, how about not letting them become the "man purse" guy or the "I've got a great big case" guy?

I get around this by putting the deck of cards, or the packet trick or the set of coins back in my case and then say "Oh... I forgot, here's another one you may like" and then take out a different deck of cards, or packet trick or set of coins. And then I repeat that sequence about 10 or 12 times. Works for me. (sarcasm included)

Ammaar suggest that you get away from being "the really big case guy" and this would hold for any of the other containers some magicians tend to carry around with them by getting a clear cosmetics bag big enough to do a table hopping set with a little extra room room for some other props or a special deck. You've got enough stuff to do three hours at a restaurant and it makes you more efficient since you can't depend on having a big bag or case of stuff. Since it is clear, you can check it to make sure it's ready to go without emptying it too. An advantage I came up with is that since most of these bags don't look cool you won't cart it into a club meeting, lecture, or session and will again be forced to work out of your pockets or just grab the Bikes and leave the rest in the car.

For Layman in restaurants or bars Yea! I got Tons of stuff In my pockets And can do way more Then they Could ever Watch! But for sessioning for the boys at a magic con. I like to have my Bag with with me! And I am NOT talking about A magic show at a club Meeting!!! I am talking about 3 or 4 Hardcore Finger Flickers At a close-up magic Con. In a bar or restaurant Going back and forth from Midnight to 7:00 A.M. But even then A small Close-up bag should be all you need ! And there is lots of time to Switch stuff in you bag while one of the other boys Are working. So it does Not look like you are going into your bag for every trick! And luring to switch out there Quietly!!! Is almost an art in it's self!!!

Yes, nothing wrong with being prepared at a session. I was referring to taking everything you have to into a themed club meeting, or, in particular, a lecture. No need for that at all. Leave the big case in the car for the session afterward if you think it might be needed.
I've seen guys at some club meetings and lectures with big cases and it's certainly not needed. Also, I have known a couple of restaurant workers/table hoppers who have worked out of cases either on stands or just sitting on the guests table, but it's not ideal. These guys had been working that way for so long that when they started doing restaurants they wouldn't transition from their case to working out of their pockets. My guess is that if they had planned their future work as a performer they wouldn't have gotten into this habit.
