Am curious to know if many perform " gambling shows" I.e " cardshark" type shows and what kind of a market you have found for such close up entertainment.

I don't know but a pal of mine operates a fun casino for hire business and he does a few card tricks at these events which fits the bill I guess.

In a way one would assume that Casinos are the last place in the world who would want to hire cardshark. After all who would want to make their customers see the stuff person they have never heard of can do with deck of cards and then immediately after the show assume that they will want to gamble as they saw nothing.... Paul Vigil made a great point about this that at least in Vegas if you perform in casinos, the last thing their personel wants magician to do is any sort of gambling routines. Same is true in our only casino in Helsinki. Every time they use magicians they demand that NO CARD TRICKS of any kind...

A fun casino is not a Casino.
Legal Issues Q. Is it legal to use fun casino equipment in the UK? A. Yes it is perfectly legal to use the fun casino equipment for parties. However, the law makes two main restrictions on you and these are: If the gaming does not involve your guests using real money to play (i.e. you play with fun money) it is not gaming and the event is exempt from the Gaming Act.

Places where dudes hang out will probably be more responsive to cardshark magic. sporting bars and such. as mentioned a place that gambles will want you to do silk tricks not fake bottom deals.

I have found festivals are a good venue for these types of shows. It gives you a nice miniature theatre setting so you can perform close-up while still have the attention of all the people that chose to enter your little tent.

I've done a card shark demonstration at a casino night fundraiser for a rotary club (father was president that year and since he bought my first magic books for me 8 years ago I couldn't say no). I imagine that is quite a market if you can have it. Onviously Jason England and Darwin Ortiz do this stuff professional and both sometimes appear in this forum, but as Ortiz is quoted saying:
' I could write a book just on how to properly present this kind of material. (I won't; I don't intend to create professional competition for myself.)" (Every now and then I re-read the quote section on Denis Behr's website for a chuckle: http://www.denisbehr.de/quotes.html ) |

Wrong forum, this forum has nothing to do with magic tricks or card juggling.
There are 50+ other forums on the Magic Café in which to discuss magic, The Gambling Spot is a forum for the discussion of cheating and hustling at cards and dice. See the moderators description at the top of the forum if in doubt as to what the subject matter of any given forum is intended to be. |

Check and see if your area has a "cigar club". Most meet in upscale lounges and hire entertainment for their gatherings.

I would print $100 advertising bills. I would band those in bundles of $1000 and hand them out to my spectators (assistamts) They used these to bet with. These bills were printed on light green paper from the stationary store, the only thing that look half way legitimate was the design.
I always made certain everyboby had some to take home. I got a number of referals from those giveaways. The Ladies loved this, as they were in charge of their own money. If I was working with couples it was fun to watch the competitive nature come out. Just about any organization is a place to start. Over the years I found, women usually dragged their better half to my shows. Once there they had a great time and won and lost a lot of "Funny Money". So don't overlook womens clubs and groups. John

Marketing is not the same thing as adversing. Both are fascinating and there is a lot to it all. Marketing is about a five year study and a very well paid thing. I was going to go into it years ago but only went to a few classes and so I know little about it. I think you would be better off buying a book or two on the basic principles of it.
