I do more urban outreach than VBS.
For those that do family shows and are believer of God do you include them in non Church shows with permission. For those non believers in God do you share your beliefs in your family shows. For me it depends on the venue and type of event. Example at a Budhist retreat kids included I mixed in Zen stories. I love to write short bits to fit venues along with set material. Harris

Yeah, I Googled it, too, after I made the post. And you're right, I'm not getting ready. Is there any money there, Harris?

Harris -
I'll do a gospel show at a church (VBS, Sunday School, church service, etc.), when they book that show and are expecting it. I'm happy to share my faith in that situation. Otherwise, I don't talk about my faith in my pure-fun shows (non-message shows). Also, I don't try to do a message for a faith different from mine. For example, I did a show for a synagogue this past fall, and was asked about doing a Jewish themed show (or even a themed trick or two), but I explained that it was best for me to do a pure-fun show. The show went over very well, and we've discussed a return visit. Once, for another church who was a long-time client, they wanted me to share about something I didn't believe in (doctrinal differences), and I steered them towards a pure-fun show as well. - Donald

Being raised Jewish I am asked to share in both places.
As a friend of folks that practice meditation I have been asked to share laugh programs at retreats. Paid shows are available in all 3. I don't charge at my own church Most outside church's are just fun oriented. Exception are bully or anti drug gigs. At one birthday party no Gospel message no Christian songs. The grand pa came up to me following the show I had never met him. We talked about the kids. As I was leaving he said, "thanks for sharing your ministry. " Thanks to all for elevating the art of magic You are appreciated by Harris.

Vacation Bible School is usually taught at CHURCH.
It's an event where kids go to learn and have fun. It's a great idea and its very big around here during the summer while regular school is out. It teaches kids to stay out of trouble. Tom

Harris I understand.
But now this is getting ridiculous when you have to go hide to talk about having a magic show for kids at a place where they might mention God. I've had enough with the few that keeps derailing threads. Tom

For clarification. VBS is a church event for children, aimed at people interested in coming to the church for a religious related event. Some are dull and boring, others are fun and entertaining, depends on who is putting it on. It is an opportunity for a family/kids magic show especially if you can tie it into the theme and the church is open to magic. It is not surprising that religious people would want to provide such opportunities for their children and other kids who want to attend. No one is required to go unless their parents require it, its a parental decision. Non religious people would probably have no interest in their children attending or in performing at such an event. It's really quite simple.

Listening is an uncommon skill, listening to someone with opposing views is really rare. I took an English class in college which focused on debate and argumentation. One of our assignments was to take a controversial topic, state our position and then argue for the opposing view. The professor required us to genuinely try to defend the opposing position and rejected any efforts that did not truly try to defeat our own stated views. Some students just couldn't do it. They were incapable of challenging their own beliefs. I found it to be one of the most useful assignments I ever had in college, and helped me to look at opposing views differently. By the way, the professor was an atheist, I am not. I aced the class, I was her favorite student, she loved every paper I wrote, read one of my papers to the class as an example. Her position was that she didn't care what you believed, but know why you believe it. What she had no respect for was people who were too intellectually lazy to take a stand for something, or to have no reason for the stand they take. Challenge what you believe, know what you believe, and be able to identify the faulty, illogical arguments that people make. That is what she taught us. She was one of my favorite professors. |

On the other has anyone do work with
Programs on CD or CB for little darlings or big kids. CD = cognitive dissonance CB = confirmation bias I have both in the creation of a program used for teens with addicted parents as well as guest lectures at colleges. Social work classes are fun to drop in and share. I also love sharing on how these relate to anger and the umbrella of feeling under them. Let's sit down have a glass tea or cup of Java. Harris

Tom, I'm not offended in the slightest. I was just expressing an opinion. I enjoy debate on religion and love to have my beliefs and opinions challenged. I'm also not above changing my mind on anything.
I am happy to respect that the 'Good News' section does not welcome atheists and I stay out of there. I don't even mind hearing about religion in this section, I just want to be able to express MY opinions here too. Just think though - only a short while ago you were saying you've never met an atheist, now we are everywhere!

If someone asked if people were getting ready for Blue and Gold events I would not really expect a lot of talk about the Scouts politics in this forum.
I'd love to see more talk about Magic in a Kid's Magic forum. I have a question though. Is the Magic you all do at VBS all or mostly tied into the church or is it mostly just a Magic Show? If this is mostly about Christian Magic then there is a forum for that. If it is a religious debate (again) then take it to "Not very Magical, Still…" I'd like to see this stay here and talk about Magic. -Mary Mowder |
