Maybe no one here has the Chazpro set. Can't be expensive, so buy it and let us know.

Right Pete. I have a set I bought from Jerry back in the 70's, why would I buy another. You'll need to find someone from a club perhaps that one member has the old set and another member has the new. Needle in the haystack perhaps. But one could get lucky.

I did find someone that had an old set and bought another one from the dealer and said there is a big difference in the way its made now and not as good as the old days when quality ment something. o well guess I will wait for a seller that wants to part with old school pins.

That is true in a lot of respects, hard to compete with some of those old craftsmen. However, there are still a lot of quality products being created now with the new technology.

It may not be the craftsmanship, but the current quality of the pins.

If you are going to do the Andrus Pins, you are better off going for an original set which will set you back $50 or more. If you are lucky you might get a set at a magic sale for much less.
I do the Slydini Pins which uses a different gimmick than Andrus. (Slydini's is the same gimmick that Ken Brooke used for his routine back in 1949, which makes me wonder if Slydini was influenced by Ken, though the routines are completely different)). It is extremely difficult to find spare sets of the brass 3" pins sold by Slydini, so in looking for spares I bought Andrus sets whenever I came across them and adapted them. Pins today, as far as I can tell are manufactured differently from forty years ago, probably because most pins are (I suspect) made in China, with most western countries having severely diminished steel industries. From what I can tell, older pins were brass, then nickel plated making them somewhat springier. There are lots of unused original Andrus sets sitting in magicians' drawers. Try asking older members of your local magic club. I don't know your age but I do know that younger magicians generally do not appreciate the wealth of knowledge and experience and contacts that older club members have. I know I didn't. Some older members will be secretive but nothing loosens those tongues quicker than someone with a genuine and sincere interest. |

Thanks Quentin!
You made some very worthwhile "points" in that post! I have a young friend who just inherited a set of Jerry Andrus's pins. I'll be sure to draw his attention to your comments. As an old "geezer", I especially appreciate your final paragraph. (signed) A very ancient "PIFF PAFF POOFER"

I have both the original set that I bought from Jerry (with a few extra pins) many years ago, the Chazpro set, a set of Bruce Berstein pins, and had Tony show me his pin routine in 1983 at the Faucett Ross magic fest.
Of them all, in my opinion, the original Andrus set, along with his book "Safety Pin Trix" is pretty hard to beat for constructing a "money-level" worker's Pin Bit routine.... As far the booklet, I like to refer to it as "The Encyclopdia of Safety Pin Tricks"......it's THAT good. For stand up and strolling, I recommend using a plain, white Gentleman's Handkerchief with these, too..... |

Yes! The old 'zipper' bit, along the hem of the hdkf. still plays! I learned years ago, to have the spec. hold onc corner while I held the other.
I can keep the hdkf. taut with that 'technique'. Also, I pull the pin TOWARDS the spec. (I make darn sure that I have a good grip) Piff Paff Poof, after all these years is still GOOD! i wish that I had bought a set of Jerry's pins!

From what I can remember, Jerry gave Chazpro his blessing on their release. They waited till they found these pins. I can't compare the two, just know that Jerry was ok with it.
