The technology worked for this observer. I was genuinely surprised by the final load, even as I was wondering if there would be one in this routine.
That said, it was a tad shy of magical for me; something that I think could be remedied easily with a tweaking of the performer's attitude to what was happening. I understand though, that that wasn't the intentional focus of this clip. Al's book goes into my Amazon cart ASAP.

I very much hope that Al has not left this forum forever. Al, you are hugely valued here by so many people. This thread and the 'What makes a great performer?' thread, both currently running, are testament to your good influence.

Al, I enjoyed the routine very much.
You were two steps ahead of me before I figured out what you were doing. And when I did figure out what you were doing, it was already done. Well done.

Al's C&B tape was one of the first I ever learned from. I've used this particular routine live with friends and family, and I've shown it to others via a YouTube video of just my hands (no eye contact and no patter). Always works for laymen even in the hands of this rank amateur.

Earlier this evening another visitor watched the clip. This time on the tv instead of the smaller PC monitor. I watched from the side as they watched the clip. They reacted with quiet to the single ball vanishes and with delight when the when up was lifted. The three ball vanish response was a larger quiet going inward moment as al showed both hands empty. the large ball appearance got a startle type reaction.

Muggle number three: no apparent response to the vanishes but lowered brows of "hmmmmm" with each appearance. The vanish of three balls got the same null outward response. The 'big finish' got a shift. They said they like magic and magicians - asked if Al has videos on YouTube. Also asked about the linking rings. Sent him a link. Al might have a new layman fan.

Al, and everyone else. I do appreciate a Cups and Balls, or Chop Cup routine that is well done, and entertaining. I enjoy watching the most complex routine, or the most basic routine in its simplest form, or a long routine, or short routine. I have no preferences of moves, or demands from the performer. Like I said, I just enjoy a routine well done.
And Al, that routine was very well done, I liked it a lot, and watched it more than once. Hope to see more videos and posts from you. By the way, I do hope any critics of this routine take you up on your request, that they make a video of themselves performing, maybe even doing the same routine, because I would really be looking forward to seeing how it should be done. |

Al, you talk about moves. I didn´t see any. This is so good that I´m NOT gonna watch the clip over and over trying to figure it all out. Instead I´ll just enjoy it for being what it is, real magic. Great!

In case somebody is interested, I bought Al's book The Theory and Practice of False Transfers, after reading the previous thread on false transfers, excellent information, and watching this particular one cup routine. If you are familiar with Schneider writing it is very detailed he uses coins and balls to illustrate the different techniques, it is not an easy reading because it is about a very narrow subject, however if I can learn what the book says, my sleights and technique will improve by several orders of magnitude. I am reading and practicing at the same time, great book if you want to improve this area of close-up magic.
The one cup routine is fantastic, very detailed in the sleights, props and choreography, why he did it for teaching false transfers, it is very usable and entertaining as a small routine, I am working on it. All along a book worth having pablo |

I'm also greatly enjoying Al's book, thanks for the recommendations. Acting students will recognize many of the book's suggestions as ideas first formulated in print by the great acting teacher Konstantin Stanislavski. They are of great importance as applied to magic.
Sometimes it's helpful to have a translation of vocabulary and jargon from one field to another in order to clear up misunderstandings. So-- What Schneider calls "Intention of reality" is what Stanislavski called "sense memory." What Schneider calls "Intention of magic" is what Stanislavski called "justification" and the "magic If." What Schneider calls "not pretending to do something" or "not acting" is what Stanislavski called "acting truthfully." I suspect that Al has discovered these things without reading Stanislavski, and that only confirms that these are timeless truths about the art of achieving verisimilitude, which can be confirmed by careful experiment. I think he is doing a very important service by applying and extending these principles to the art of magic. Thanks Al for a very useful and engrossing book!

I've been recommending Mr. Schneider's book on and off for some time, I bought it as soon as it was released.
I continue to purchase his material, the latest being The Theory and Practice of False Transfers, wonderful stuff! Then I was flamed badly by Funsway and Townsend last year for no reason except that I made the recommendation that people should read The Theory and Practice of Magic Deception. Mr. Schneider's books are an excellent resource and contain a wealth of knowledge neither of those to guys ever have shown in their posting here on the Café. |

Hi Tree
I say, "hate the sin and love the sinner". Both Townsend and Funsway (and you) are valued members of our little community. We can't always be in 100% agreement with one another. Just think what a boring place the Café would be if we were... Julie |

I'll add my praise for the book as well. Very detailed and hard work if you take it seriously. But the results speak for themselves.

I highly recommend Al's writings. Please help. I often post ideas that run contrary to common view simply because my experience is different from most here. I also attempt to address or correct errors in logic that might confuse other readers. (my pedantic professor self). You might have every reason to disagree with something I posted. But, to suggest an intent I never had seems a bit of a reach. My objective is clarity rather than confusion -- to fuel a discussion so that I might learn. I can learn from this exchange. IMHO the discussion would go better in the food for thought section with a link to Al's routine and a few words explaining that the video is a demonstration of his coordinating looking at the audience with sleights as they happen.

Actually Jonathan, IMHO opinion, here is the right place, the OP brought the link just to say that this was a very nice routine. That's all. And people answered to that.
Just about the routine, no misdirection, no looking at their eyes not how effective the routine is with laymen or professionals. There are not many one cup routines with only 3 balls. The discussion between you, Al, Funsway and Etienne about the takes, vanishes, misdirection and techniques used, where Al brought this routine as an example, is in the coins forum very detailed and interesting. I suggest you and Al continue the discussion there so we don't derailed this one with the same topic. |
