Hi all,
In these modern and High-Tech times l guess magicians in most still stick to ideas and props that are "old school", routines like for example Cups and Balls.. Even though we do routines that are originally 100 years old, they still entertain audiences today. What l'm looking for is more "new thinking" magic, done with Credit Cards or Mobilephones, do anyone know of any sources for a more High Tech magicshow? -e-

MAGIC:
Experiments with the Art & Thoughts on the Artistry by Kostya Kimlat This has 2 things that fit your question: Catch - ## (celphone effect) License to Steal, to Amaze, to Refrigerator (licence plate divination) but it also contains his Roadrunner Cull, KFC Move and Culligula Triumph. There are things that use computers and wierd digital display effects, laser pointers and what not but I think there's alot of room for the audience to assume that technology does all the work once we start openly displaying it. I think the credit card thing would be difficult because no one will let you borrow their card. I am certainly fascinated by the surreptitious applications of technology, but there aren't alot of things I can think of that openly use them to any great success.

Good point. I think that the appeal to magic is that things happen that modern technology cannot explain, such as instant transportation or transpositions...the cup was empty now there's a ball under it. Using simple objects such as balls, cups, and coins is completely baffling as opposed to using cell phones which can store information, calculators, lasers and such. Computers and video games can do amazing things but when a person sees something impossible happen like their ring disappear and appear on a key chain in plain sight or a lit cigarette vanish into empty hands they're left with a sense of wonder that will not be forgotten about or outdated in a year or so.

Nothing wrong with timeless props and routine plots.
HOWEVER, nostaliga remains an illness. Got spats? Expect a child to be happy when given a nickle? Using coins that have long since passed out of common use as currency? When was the last time you wore a tophat, tails and cape to the opera? Letting go of what is not pertinant may open up some room in your thinking to work with what is current.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I just want to note that the CLEVER cellphone routine by Kimlat is a prediction made really interesting by the use of a cellphone, but the cellphone does not interfere with the magic (no one will attribute anything to the cellphone, only to the performer)
Another thing I thought of is Lennart Greene's Laser Deal... but that's his routine with the snap deal. Clever fellow. As far as bringing Magic into the 21st century, its already been done... its called Mentalism... the accepted unknown of this age, no one believes in magic anymore.

David Ben's new book has a lot of these new school tricks.
Three of them were published in Magic Magazine. I know one used a laptop computer, and one used a cell phone, but I forget what the other one used. I'll look for it tonight and post the name of his book and whatnot tomorrow. TJ Ok I found the article. The name of David Ben's book is called "Tricks."It is a book of non-card tricks, but not necessarily new school tricks. One of the tricks from the magazine uses stamps. There were 3 tricks in there but only 2 used new school stuff. One was a prediction of two "freely" selected words from any book. I doubt that many of the tricks in his book are new school tricks, but if you search for a review they might say. |
