I'm not offering, but if someone was to offer you $1,000,000 you would not sell?

It is really sad and upsetting how peoples hard work is not respected by some. Atlas put his heart and soul into this book Smile

I wonder how many didn't make the cut.

At any rate, it may be best not to jump to conclusions about the seller's motives. For all we know, she is trying to raise money for some surgical procedure for her granny.

Atlas should offer to buy this back AT COST (or possibly depreciated somewhat). Then he can sell it AT COST to someone else. That way everyone wins (except for the greedy person who only bought this for the purpose of lazy profiteering - who incidentally wouldn't be LOSING anything under this system either).

At that price I'd think about it but realistically that's not going to happen. I certainly would not sell it for any price that someone would realistically offer.

Let's be honest though any creator that sells a 'limited edition' is contributing to the problem of inflated second hand sales. Love the comment 'Atlas should offer to buy it back at cost'

There are 2 problems with this : 1) Atlas would turn into a library with everyone renting his book from him!
2) Noone would sell it back at cost as they can make more money on the open market!

To be honest, you can't blame someone for selling it on at inflated prices. As a community we have perpetuated this situation. If you don't want to see magic items being sold in this way there are only a few options:

1) No-one releases limited editions at inflated prices. A fair price is charged for all!

2) If limited editions do exist, when they are then sold on the open market - you simply refuse to pay an over inflated price! If everyone did that, sellers would be forced to lower their price!
There is no holy grail!

I notice that the $500 sale thread has been "deleted". Rightly so.

Since this book requires hard work to master and it may take a month or more of work before you can 'start' to do it, many buyers may not like it. This is because some people are looking for effects that they can do instantly.

Its their choice but if someone do intend to sell the book, just contact Atlas. He will let you know about people who cleared his vetting process, but did not get the book as it was sold out. Then just contact these people and make an offer to them. This is how I got the book.

This is the best way to save the book from going into wrong hands (=Chinese websites). Please respect the work put into it by Atlas. Please respect your profession (Mentalism / Magic).

Thanks!

I contacted atlas regards the $500 book too, people who have bought the book to try making money is totally out of order and they probably didn't even read it, this spoils it for those who have missed out.
I'm on atlas's waiting list so hopefully I will get lucky.

It frustrates me that someone would do that. Very rarely is there a release that is SO good that it looks and feels like the holy grail.

Then how about Atlas printing a few more (limited) number of copies to satisfy the persons that were not able to join in the first time (with an extra cost if necessary) ?
That would help smoothing the second market inflation. But I agree with Clel-Mentalist and I think that it is a little bit naive to stick with a limited edition concept and then being shocked or surprised that there could be some inflation later.

Then it really wouldn't be "limited"........

I saw another thread were it was being sold for 200 GBP and it vanished too....

Heck, once you let the Imp out of the bottle....

I hope Atlas put subtle marking on all copies as I have a bad feeling the book will be in PDF pirate form soon enough.

If creators truly charged a fair price for their works only working professionals and the independently wealthy would be able to afford them. Let's take train tracking as an example, this represents 6 years to develop and refine the effect before you even factor in the time to write the book. Writing a book isn't a simple thing like writing a forum post it is a slow laborious process that usually takes months and in some cases years from start to finish. Then someone often has to be paid to handle the layout as that is a different skillset, likewise again for the artwork. Then of course there are printing costs, anyone that has this particular book will attest that this has not been cheaply thrown together, the printing and binding is of the highest quality. Not to mention that this is part of Atlas working repotoire.

So what is a fair price? And fair to whom for that matter?

Unless that sale thread was deleted by the SELLER - there's absolutely no reason for that to be removed. He bought the book - and for whatever reason, he is selling it on. Not being an owner (nor wanting to be), unless Atlas specifically had purchasers sign a "no sale" clause (which, I don't think he could even do), the buyer is well within his rights to sell the book. He paid for it, he can do what he wants with it. He is not morally wrong for selling it.

I didn't hear this cry of "foul" when Devil in Disguise was being sold for $500. No one complains when a copy of the original Pure Effect sells for ridiculous amounts. Andy Nyman's Bulletproof has been offered for inflated prices. What makes THIS book so special?

Share with friends you trust

Sell if you want to make some money

If you do the former, you will gain much and learn from friends - and also who are not friends...

If you do the latter - the question is why sell it at all - and why not sell it to only working professionals? That is fine too. Why sell it to anyone? There is nothing wrong with selling it at whatever price point you want - I've seen the so called limited editions come out with high price points at times - caveat emptor. Maybe its worth it to some and not others - its a secret you buy and it might be something you don't like and want to resell. They can sell it at whatever price they want - with whatever consequences....

Anyway, here are interesting links
