What's your go-to bar trick?
Desert Rose is Chris Randall's go-to because it amazes every time. And back when he was single, he ended it by cleverly swapping phone numbers with his favorite spectator. With nothing but a napkin, Chris shows you how to amaze and delight. And if you have flash-paper, you can add fire to take it to the next level. Available on PenguinMagic Looks so fun !

The napkin rose effect is absolutely brilliant, IMO. Watch the demo video. Even when you know exactly how it is done, the illusion is perfect.
Randall offers some routine options for when you can't use fire - which are fine and effective - but the trick really shines if you're in a situation where you can light flash paper. Seriously, this is pure eye candy - a miracle in your hands with a very nice giveaway at the conclusion. The phone number trick is cute, but it's more for situations where you're a civilian at a bar trying to meet ladies than it is for when you're working as a magician. If you're working, the whole effect would be in very poor taste and may get you fired, IMO. But for an informal situation where you're just a guy at a bar, maybe it's OK. Can't say for sure, because I've never tried to pick up girls with magic. Seems kind of Howard Wolowitz-esque, to me, which probably isn't what you're going for.

Maxfield,
So without fire available (actually, when not in a place where flash paper is appropriate), is the effect worth it? I mean, how difficult is it with regard to setup, clean up, reset for next performance, etc.? Thanks! Jim |

Not very difficult at all. It's still a nice effect without the fire, and you'll have a great giveaway, but with the fire it's really amazing, IMO.
As far as reset goes, you'll have to make up a bunch of gimmicks, but that process is pretty quick - just a few seconds per gimmick - and if you have access to the right kind of bar napkins, you'll have a limitless supply. Is it worth it? Certainly. I paid more for the original Napkin Rose DVD. This download shows you how to make one of those quickly, and offers several ideas on what to do with it.

I got it last night but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. Probably later today.

PRO TIP: use the tip about smell Kevin James mentioned in his lecture. The demo proves you should (you'll understand)

I just noticed that this is being sold at half the cost at MJM Magic:
http://www.mjmmagic.com/store/-p-18545.html EDIT: I should clarify that statement. What MJM Magic is selling appears to be the EXACT SAME effect (Desert Rose by Chris Randall), but it's from the original produced footage that Chris Randall did when it was first released. I believe Penguin produced a newer release of the product with possibly additional handlings, but from what I have heard, for the most part, this is the exact same effect for $4.95 (magic with a paper rose). |

I'm not sure MJM was authorized to do that since it's a rip off of a DVD.

I've made about 1000 roses over the last 20 yrs. Always a killer. Chris' simple routine can be a fabulous routine, especially if you use flash paper. Extremely visual and memorable. If you don't know how to make the rose, that part of the download alone is worth triple the price.

I have no idea. I just think it's odd that just came out right after Penguin did an official one. No skin off my rose.

Stucky wrote: I'm not sure MJM was authorized to do that since it's a rip off of a DVD. Just to clarify, we are NOT ripping anyone off. The download we're offering is from the original Desert Rose that Chris Randall released. Even though it's the same effect, it's the original effect which has been out for a long time, hence the lower price. We have been given full permission by Murphy's Magic to sell the item, and I've spoken directly to them to confirm that fact. It appears what Penguin is selling is the exact same effect (albeit refilmed) with a higher price tag. Just understand that what we're selling is the Desert Rose effect that Chris Randall originally put out there, and we wanted people to know that fact. Hope that clears things up! Quote:

Before you accuse someone of something maybe understand the context. "Ripp off the DVD" means they pulled the footage directly off the disc. "Ripping a DVD" is video terminology not an accusation.
