Just got back from attending the lecture live in Columbus, Ohio. What an absolute delight. Fun, entertaining and informative. My wife Wendi helped Marc with his opening effect, The Gift, and it is going into my next show. It's a cute effect that will play well for all audiences.
Bobby p.s. Wendi got to keep the gift, so it is literally going into my show.

What were the real gems of the lecture.
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

I'm playing catch-up with about 6 lectures I haven't yet watched.
I might just skip to this one based on Bobby's feedback. What a lucky guy to be there in person!

Steven,
This might sound cliche and possibly trite, but the real gem of the lecture was Marc Salem's interactions with the audience. He is funny, and he never stops. Very entertaining. The Gift is something that will work for the kinds of shows I do. He has a list of gifts and asks his helper if she has any of these. My wife, who helped him in the lecture, didn't have any of them, so he looks at me and says something like, "Boy, you don't buy her much." Funny bit. He has three spectators write down two-digit numbers. They are added. It comes up to a three-digit number. Another spectator picks one of the numbers, and that is my wife's gift. She opens a bag, and it is the gift chosen from the list. To top it off, there is a receipt in the bag for the same amount as the numbers. He has a nice Bank Night routine, Richard Osterlind's is still my favorite, but this has a nice touch. Ungimmicked, I might add. He did two book tests that were pretty good. My wife also helped with the first book test. Perhaps the one that has a lot of potential is his business card that can be used for a Q&A routine. Marc does not do any readings, and though he is a psychologist, he does not give advice. However, he will have people write names of cities on his business card, fold them up, and he starts talking about the places the person visited and can gather information from the cities to kind of describe the person. This is ingenious. If you do a Q&A routine, this might very well be worth the price of admission. With some business cards you can probably design yourself if you have a desktop publishing program and a paper bag, you can get a strong performance. I am intrigued by this one. I am like Marc and do not do readings. I have heard the adage that all serious mentalists do a Q&A routine. This just might fit the bill for me. I might add, this is based on an old principle, however, Marc has streamlined it, and the streamlining makes sense. Bobby

I have to be honest and say this fell way short of my expectations. I don't want to be hurtful but want to post my honest evaluation... FWIW!
Let me start by saying there are some nice ideas you can take and run with (you can refine to your liking), however, outside of "the gift" the lecture seemed to be mostly a compilation of effects that had some clever thinking but were flawed in some way (either in logic or handling) In fact at the beginning of the lecture he states something along the lines of... these are not the methods or presentations I use in my shows. That's cool. Here are some of the things I didn't particularly care for... Bank Night Don't exchange the last envelopes like that kids. Think about it just a little and you'll come up with a more logical and transparent (less awkward) way to do it. I believe however with a little thought this could be a powerful handling. (seems as though that little extra thought was missing from the lecture) S**** Very surprised to see how (I hate to say it) amateurish this was executed. Plus, I use that type of ******k and would hardly call it the "worst." Try them all out and practice with whatever feels best to you. The key is to make it look natural. PRACTICE with one hand then two hands. Add gestures. Make it natural. But put the time in. 50/50 *********n Would you really tear an en****** almost in ***f? Humor??? I'm sure Marc's a nice guy, but I didn't find myself laughing too much. Felt bad for the poor guy with the "hood" comment btw. Swaying and rocking made me kinda sea sick. (surprised to see that) Anyway, I've never seen Marc perform but have heard a lot about him. I'm sure his show is great but unfortunately you'd wouldn't know it from watching the lecture. Sorry again if this is hurtful in any way. I wanted to post my honest opinion as I appreciate the honesty of others when I'm evaluating a potential purchase. Please remember, this is just my opinion! Again, there are some ideas here you can run with. But then again, there are a TON of ideas you can run with in Annemann for $12.00. |

The real valuer is the insight you get and the last hour when Harland and Salem talked was gold IMHO. There are a reason why some have success in our art and others (myself included) not so much. I personally really don't need to learn more effects. I want to learn how to become a better performer-thinker-constructing a better show etc. But if you need more tricks I recommend the Devin Knight lecture.... |

Hey fellow Magi,
I felt Mr Salem was not my cup of tea, Usually love the Lectures,I have watched over 40 enjoying %95 of them But I felt this one fell short as well, He's a Professional okay, But I am extremely disliking the magician who makes fun at his audiences expense or is aloof in any context, I don't even particularly care for the magician who says " You weren't paying attention ,I'll do it again" Excuse me? The spectators are watching you, giving you their valuable time, and in turn you are giving your time to them. If you have charisma you can get away with a lot But Mr Salem is again not the most charismatic of people. My 2 cents Derek

Amateurish!?
Come on! Marc is a REAL pro of Mentalism He doesn't perform for magicians. We as performers watch things differently. For me this is one of the BEST Mentalism Penguin Lectures, full with GREAT and REAL WORLD information and effects. Simple methods placed in the correct structure. Best

But... be honest here... do you really think that handling would fly (for laypeople) in any situation other than a 1 on 1? This is what I was talking about when I said I was expecting more. Not more tricks. I was giving an honest assessment of the lecture from my point of view guys. If you feel differently that's your right and I respect that. Peace |

My honest opinion:
probably the first penguin lecture I can't watch til the end. I don't get his sense of humor, how he treats the audiance members is not the way I feel. a lot of talk about nothing. final conclusion: I'm sure he's a great performer, my respect. but teaching and lecturing is definetly not his goal. the participants from the audience felt not comfortable, that's why different people that were called out to assist, just had to refuse. i'm at 90 minutes now and stop watching. i'm sorry for marc but lecturing is imo definetly not his passion.

Sorry to hear not everyone liked the lecture. I agree with the 'hood comment, however, it was an entertaining lecture. Everyone there was having a good time (I was in the audience, I helped with the Tic Tac effect). I thought he was hilarious.
But, that's what makes the world go 'round. We all have our likes and dislikes. Bobby

Sandsjr, you are mixing 2 things.
Being amateur isn't synonym or mediocre thinking. I know several amateur performers who are far better than other "pros". I take the qualifier that you use because I don't think that deserve that, as simple as that. Marc is a pro who knows what he is doing and the "technique" isn't everything. If the attention is on a little space (pad) and not in the perfomer´s communicative efforts, surely something isn't right. Again, we see things differently and I know that those performances can be enough to create good entertainment and a few believers. At the end of the day, his premise for lay audience is credible and we can see it in other places. Best

Amira, when you watch Marc on the 60 minutes special he performs like a first class professional! I imagine all of his shows are excellent otherwise he'd never enjoy the success he has. When you have Bob C saying he's one of the best in the business, that's saying something. Because of this I had certain expectations with regards to the Penguin lecture that simply weren't met. That's all. I agree with you he is a Pro for sure, it's just that his lecture wasn't on the level of his performing and looked less professional in comparison.
Hope this clarifies things. All the best, Bobby |

A couple of questions for those of you that bought this lecture. Was this the same material and content Marc has been presenting in his various lectures around the country this past year and recently at the East Coast Mind Jam or was this different/more/new?
How long did the entire lecture run? |

I can agree to some degree that Marc isn't best lecturer or charismatic person, but all stuff was real world and without expensive gimmicks, all stuff can be used for stage and for the price of the lecture - it worths it a lot.
