One funny thing I have experience in my case is that publicity leads to more publicity.

The only White House event I have participated in is the Easter Egg Roll Annual event held the day after Easter. It is an unpaid event, at least from my perspective. I have no idea who else is or is not paid. The publicity part of it is a learning experience as much as anything else. Just like any other aspect of business, it can be leveraged to really help, or it can go untapped and not really contribute in a meaningful way. I am still trying to figure much of that out.

Getting picked? I'm sure like any gig it is how you advertise yourself, who you know, contacts made, getting a lucky call, etc.

By looking at the pictures it looks like everyone is set up and does a show with the audience walking around. So my question is does the entertainers have a stage and do a big show or are they just walking around doing their show like strolling magic? I thought their might be a big stage with times with the shows.
Thanks |

It is booked through a process which includes getting personal and security clearance and is booked through a representing agency. At least is was several years ago as one of my agencies was approached to represent this and another White House event/program. We enjoyed our relationship with them but no longer handle this. So unless this has changed, to the best of my recent knowledge this is how it's handled. At the time they were only permitted in a designated area outside the grounds. I do not believe that has changed, but what is good for the performers is it seems to get reported as it being "on the lawn" of the White House" which is the preferred perception of the performers. As for the booking agency, I am not surprised no one here is willing to give it up as many others here would then try to approach this and prevent those already with an in from returning. It kind of works on a first come first served basis with teh proper considerations. As far as the the media coverage this is usually generated by the artist themselves and is not part of the booking itself. Yes, the media and press cover it as a fluff or HI piece but the coverage you are seeing is from the efforts of the performers themselves. I hope this more directly answers your questions. |

Mindpro you are the man. Thanks for the detailed reply. I always have wondered why I never got an invite to perform there. You know with all the awards. If you are ever in Myrtle Beach let me know. I want you to come to one of my resort shows. Thanks again for begin so helpful.

I did try to directly answer the question to the best of my ability. I approach this event much like any other opportunity. Find out who has authority to "hire" me, provide as compelling a reason as possible why I would be a good fit for their needs. Show up and perform to the best of my ability and pursue return opportunities if desired.
This is no more a first come first serve event than any other client of mine. I have never auditioned for any opportunity, so my methodology is to pursue a potential client, hopefully land a gig and try to maintain the good ones. Sometimes I am requested year after year, sometimes clients prefer to change up the entertainment. I would think those who run the Easter Egg Roll operate in a similar fashion. They weigh the quality of the entertainer, ease of doing business with them, and their perception of the need for variety. I have no direct knowledge of their methodology, but this is common sense. With respect to discussing contact information - Who in their right mind would post their leads to any current client. I hope that was not the intent of this inquiry. Who waits to be invited to perform for any client? With respect to performing areas, we have unrestricted access to most of the South Lawn, minus a small area for the actual roll itself. I was actually quite surprised at the liberty they gave performers to set up and perform virtually anywhere on the South Lawn. |

If I wanted to know who did the booking I would have asked that question directly. I look at the pictures and it looks like kid show performers. I have always heard about it and just wondered if it would be worth my time. One more question if you do it for free do you consider that a client (Danny). Or would you consider that one of your tax write offs?

Excuse me for being away so long, Michael. Thanks for answering the questions for my guys. I been so busy putting my promotional material together for the news media and entertainment agencies. Performing at the White House is my highest paid gig when it comes to benefits.
There were only 5 magicians selected to be there this year. Charlie, Checkers, Nick, Michael and I. I was the only clown. Thanks for taking the pictures for me Charlie. |
