I have heard in passing people talk about putting "work" into a deck. For example, I have heard that Richard Turner is a master at putting "work" into a deck that is impossible to detect.
What kind of work are we talking about and where can I learn it? Lets define "work" as alterations put on a deck that are hard to find? Currently the only work I put into my deck are corner shorts, or a breather crimp. |

My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

All of those would be examples of work. Also, but not limited to would be Infinity, Scallops, Belly....it goes on and on.

Ok... So I'm pretty new around here. What is work? Isn't that just called a marked deck? I've done a few crimps on cards. So that I can find them. But I've never heard of the term "work".

I can only think of a few off the top of my head. Crimp work, sand work, punch work, edge work, daub work. I am sure I am forgetting a lot more. I'm not familiar with what sort of work Richard Turner uses but considering his skill he is probably very good at more than one technique.

Buy Martin Nash - Infinity and Beyond DVD to learn how to put 'work' in the deck on the fly.

A marked deck is something, but you could also shorten some cards, bend/crimp half of the deck to ease cuts, etc. Anything goes. If a deck is modified so as to let you do something with ease, then you've put work in it. P! |

I think Ado hit the nail on the head. If you have prepared one or more cards in a deck, that's work.

Really? So, altering/marking/mutilating/tagging a card or card(s) is considered "putting work" into a deck? Dang, I thought maybe this post/string was actually about putting the WORK in to a deck (i.e. practicing... practicing... practicing...).
Oh... sorry, new guy checking in with the card guys and dolls, since I'm kind of leaning on it being my area of special study and work in magic. But I don't think I'll be putting in the same kind of work into my deck just yet. I'm a little busy actually "putting IN the work" with my deck. I'll poke around a bit more, but I was kind of looking for exercise routines, if you will, on honing my card handling skills. I was wondering if there was a specific move, flourish, sleight, or technique that any of you use daily to keep the hands sharp and improve speed or ability. Perhaps it's different for each individual, but I've got my Royal Road and it's often times a Royal Pain in the... hard to read and follow, but the DVD companion helps. Okay... carry on, sorry to interrupt.
Magic is believing in yourself. If you can do that, you can make anything happen.
