As an experiment, I picked up the silicone version and a set of his balls to go with it. The balls work well with the cup and the cup, though soft, doesn't require a great deal of a "bang" to make it work, so the cup holds its shape during the routine. I do refer to it as a camping cup for presentation purposes and the cup is large enough for a fairly small final load (I use a lime). Overall, I rather like it. Yes, you can chop a camping cup and get a similar effect. This, however, was worth saving the trial and error for me.

I found the silicone cup to be hit and miss with the chop ball and felt that the folds in the cup (being so thin they are almost see thru) were troubling to me as I could just imagine them tearing after a good bit of use. I ended up just returning it to Penguin for a store credit. Overall, I think it "works well enough" I just couldn't see it lasting. I feel the paper coffee cups are a much better deal. You get the chop balls and 3 shimmed paper coffee cups (aprox 8 oz cups) for only a couple dollars more than the Chop Ball price. I simply removed the shim from one of the cups and put it in a different cup from my kitchen cupboard and made a nice chop cup of my own. Plus I have 2 coffee chop cups to use (and did not have to but that set of balls separately. I really like his products overall, I just think the silicone cup wont last a lot of use.

I have the version 2 in black now, don't think it comes in red yet but the version 2 is considerably better and I believe will last a very long time.

I've had the version 1 black cup for about 4 years now. I've used the heck out of it pre COVID and on average once a week since March 2020 till April 2021. As things relax a bit around here It is back in my pocket and is starting to get more use. So far the folds are showing no signs of weakening or tearing that I can see.
I normally borrow a bill (having the gaffed bill in my pocket) and use a couple of limes as the final loads. Note: if I'm performing this as a one-off I'll add John Carney's bill to lemon finale. The release is easy depending on the strength of the gaffed ball. Leo's Chop balls release easily. A tap with the end of a pen, pencil or even a finger will release it. A firm put down (well shy of a slam) will also release it. My gaffed bill takes a firm tap compared to Leo's Chop balls. The cup I have will not take a regulation pool ball as a load. It does pass as a collapsible, camping cup. It measures at about 5/8 inch thick collapsed by about 3 inches in diameter. It is not quite 3" tall when opened (approximately 2 3/4 inches). It is not horribly attractive especially compared with the new leather cups of similar size being produced today. The real advantage of this little prop is that it compresses and will slide into a shirt or pants pocket easily. And if you store it in a playing card box then you have the gag. OK the argument of having to carry the balls and the final loads is valid. BUT, If you are going to table hop performing a Chop Cup routine you are going to carry the final loads anyway and at least one gaffed bill or two balls needed for the routine. I find two small limes and a gaffed bill/ball take up little jacket pocket space. Honestly it is not a bad option, it is just not a pretty option, for a small Chop Cup. I am thinking of getting a version 2 since it is relatively inexpensive (for a Chop Cup) to compare and to use for table hopping. Frankly I've been thinking of using two to perform Carl Andrews Table Hopping Cups and balls. Then no real bulky final loads. Like any prop it has pros and cons and ultimately it is a matter of taste. Really it is horses for courses.

AFA collapsible chop cups I always thought this one was interesting. I don’t own it but it may look nicer than the harmonica cup, but I guess that’s personal preference anyway.
You don’t carry it in a card case, just the opposite in fact, you carry your cards inside of it. Then it transforms into a small leather cube. Might be worth checking out. https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S22483 |

I have an original one of Leo's and the smaller one, I made three. Purchased the cups at a camping store. I prefer the ones I made because Leo's inside bottom is shiny and min are the same dull color of the black cup. Less obvious that something is amuck.

Oops, guess I cannot post a picture. Didn't seem to work. Maybe this will work. It shows all of my Chop Cup collection. Some Rings N'Things, Michael Kaminskas, TCCPresents, some Homemade, and some I patinated. The small collapsible one I use a small chop ball and pull the cup and ball attached out of my pocket. Ball towards me and then I expand the cup, pushing the ball into the cup. They see my hands clean through out this process, then the ball appears and I continue the routine.

Leo Smetsers has created one of the most practical finales to your Harmonica cup performances possible. Trust me when I say that they will never see this coming.
