Just get out there and do what you know best. Its natural to feel nervous but the more you perform the easier it will get. Good luck for the 7 th

Congrats! I agree with the statement "Just have fun". If YOU are having fun, neither will your audience!

Don't carry everything you own.
You will probably do the same 6 or 7 things over and over (hopefully, not all together). If you're hired back you may be glad of some new material. If it is a long gig save back material for the 2nd half. It makes repeats for the same people less likely. Relax and listen to the spectators. Their input is the key to staying in the moment and spontaneous. They really do want you to succeed and you are all there for a good time (you get a bonus of cash and experience). You are in for some fun. Paying gigs tend to have the best audiences (I.E., not filled with your friends and family.) -Mary Mowder |

Hi Josh!
I "beat you" by a "year"!!! lol! I was THIRTEEN when I did my first PAID show on October 24, 1945! I booked the local Junior High School and made $26.00 in forty minutes! (Grown men,in those days, worked all week for that! In "today's money", that would equal about $250.+!!! That show "got me" a 3 column picture ("above the fold"!)and a feature story in the local paper--which "notoriety" brought a whole bunch of club dates! Now, it's YOUR turn!!! From your post, it would appear that you are doing a "walk around". That's a good way to get started. (That market didn't exist in '45.) It's perfectly normal to have a few "butterflies" in your stomach. If you've PLANNED, and PRACTICED, odds are that your PERFORMANCE will be PERFECT! When you get home after, grab a notebook and write down your comments on your performance, while the experience is still fresh in your mind. Write down the good things, --and the problems, if any. If any problems occurred, write down how you plan to fix them. The tendency is to remember the good things and forget the "other" things. Writing it will help you "focus on fixing"! Will Rogers when asked about a project, replied, "I'm pleased--but not satisfied!" I hope that YOU will be pleased--but NEVER satisfied, because when you stop getting better, you start getting worse! Julius Caesar expressed it even more briefly, "Non progredi est regredi!" (Not going forward, is going backward!) Break a leg! Dick

Ummm. That SHOULD read, "If YOU AREN'T having fun, neither will your audience"

JOSHUA:
Listen well to the wise words of Dick Oslund. He is probably one of the most well-respected "workers" on the Café. Mr. Oslund was a touring pro for many decades. He knows what he is talking about! Let us know how the gig went...we are all curious!

Hello Café!!
Just got home from my first payed gig ever! I have a lot to say so here goes: On my way to the location I listened to some music to help get me pumped up and take my mind of being nervous when I got there I was more exited than nervous but my hands where a little shaky and of course I made a mistake in the first minute of being out of the car I walked into the wrong food market and asked to speak to the manager and the person said oh that's next door so he took me to the manager that hired me she said hello and said she was glad I could make it and I started out by showing her and her workers a trick I performed the invisible deck because its something I have performed many times and I am okay performing it even when my hands shake I performed it without mistake and she and her workers laughed and where very surprised and she told me she didn't expect that and that it was amazing! I said thank you and I started to move around the sidewalk outside the outlet I performed and my hands got less shaky and less shaky until I was perfectly comfortable approaching people and performing. My approach was " Hello my name is Joshua I have been hired to walk around the plaza and perform magic would you guys like to see some magic?" Most said " Sure!" Some said " Well...Make it quick" but even the ones reluctant to let me show them some magic said afterwards wow that was awesome I'm glad I watched. I had one group of ladies that 2 said they wanted to see a trick but 1 said not really. Well I guess democracy ruled because I landed up showing them a quick invisible deck routine and said goodbye and have a good night others wanted to see many tricks so I kept performing. When someone said no I just said " Okay thank you have a great evening" I made many contacts and had at least 10 people say they wanted to hire me for something I got payed said thank you and left the manager said they would like to hire me again next year! I am going to write the manager a hand written note to say thanks for hiring me! OVERALL I feel this gig was a huge success I still have much work to be done and I can definitely get better I am about to go write down the things I can work on like dick recommended! Thanks for reading and thanks for all the encouraging words before the gig I read them ALL and they helped so much Thank you all of me please leave me some comments with tips, suggestions, or just comments! ha ha Thank You all, Joshua |

Excellent!
First of many great gigs I'm sure but this one will stand out. Make a point of writing down which effects you did on your (dated) booking sheet. You may not yet have a booking sheet but you'll need one. Those scraps of paper and backs of envelopes get hard to keep track of. LOL -Mary Mowder |
