Poker Pot – Jack Avis (Ken Brooke)
Product Description If you’re looking for something completely different in a close up routine – Here it is! Used by professionals for years, we are happy to re-release this upgraded version. Each unit is hand made by Louie Gaynor, crafted from the finest walnut. Far superior to the original model made from aluminium. Each box is hallmarked LUE – for Louie Gaynor. Meticulous detail and quality in every way! Jack Avis has taken two classical principles and by blending them together has produced a clean cut magical effect for performing what is known as “CHINK-A-CHINK.” The box removes the need for shells or “extra units” of the items employed thus, the weakness of having to obtain and later ditch them is entirely eliminated. Roy Johnson has added additional material to the original.Once the basic principle is understood, Roy’s working can be quickly understood! And there is even more additional thoughts and routines provided by the late great Ken Brooke. Link: http://www.stevensmagic.com/shop/poker-p......-brooke/ |

I recently received this. Apparently, it is a re-release of an upgraded version made out of metal. And, I thought I had just about everything in magic, and I didn't have this.
It is a really beautiful piece made out of walnut. The craftsmanship is superb! The props come with written instructions and routines including patter from Jack Avis, Roy Johnson, and Ken Brook. The wooden props are 1 inch square, a perfect size, not too bulky, not too small. It's amazing that Louie was able to make such precision props out of wood. Fine walnut at that! Given what you get, the price is very reasonable. I am very happy with this purchase. KJ |

I don't think there is any performance video, unless you find something from when this was being produced with metal boxes. However, I don't know what it may have been called then.
I see this as more of a utility device, like an okito box, where you can do any number of routines. It comes with 4 dice and two wooden boxes. One of the boxes is ungimmicked and the other is cleverly gimmicked. I am still playing around with it, but I think that in addition to the written routines it comes with, there are a lot of things you could do with this. Here is a brief description of the routines is comes with: 1. Jack Avis Routine He shows his "educated dice", and talks about all the things they can do. In addition to playing games, they can do tricks. He demonstrates how "this one" can pass through the top of a table as quetly as a ghost through and old oak door. His routine is not just a simple die through table, it is a five phase routine using all four dice. It starts out as a die through the table and then goes into the phases with all four dice going from one hand to the other. 2. Roy Johnson's Additions Roy presents some additions and modifications to Jack's routine. It seemed to me to be a bit of different patter and slightly different phases. I think the value of seeing both is to help you come up with your own routine that perhaps combines different elements from each. 3. Ken Brooke's Something From Nothing This is a routine based on moves he learned from Dai Verson. I have yet to try this, but in reading the description, it sounds almost too clever to believe. The routine is about dice that appear from nowhere. It is a very cleverly constructed routine, with a good description of every move. For example, one of the moves involves tossing two dice through the air from one hand to the other as if they are one die. Apparently, the various (larger) motions make it seem as if only one die is being thrown. He says you throw the dice a good 12 inches from one hand to the other and they don't see that there are two. This routine does not use the gimmick. He proposes that this routine is a perfect intro to a followup routine with the gimmicks. They don't talk about it in the write up, but I have been thinking about a routine similar to "Imagination Coins" by Garrett Thomas, but using the gimmick and dice. I think the possibilities are only limited by the imagination. KJ |

BTW, I have been playing around with the toss move for just a few minutes and I see that if it is done correctly, it really does appear as if just one die is being tossed from one hand to the other.

Not sure what routine this is but it does use the prop...beautifully and flawlessly:

Like Bonnie Raitt said, "I miss Little Feat more than I miss being 8 years old." Thanks for the concerts + recordings, Lowell, Richie, and Paul!

That is just one possible routine.
I am working on a routine where the die appears and disappears in the participants hand. It was inspired by Garrett Thomas' Imagination coins routine. KJ |

I'm also working on a transition "gag" to switch the gimmick box with the ordinary box to do a gag dice stacking routine. This shows the box ungimmicked. I can then follow that up with a real dice stacking routine. I think it has nice flow: Real magic, gag, real magic.
