I am a card magician but I want to add more to my repertoire. Specifically coins or even rings. I can do the basics such as classic palms and finger palms, vanishes etc. What products do you recommend that are on the market? Hard hitting coin magic that doesn't require being a coin expert.

Thanks very much

Kinda the opposite of you want, but expert coin magic by david roth is a nice start. Also, Bobo's is great too

You could try Digital Disolve, it seems to get really strong reactions and is very simple and easy to do

I forgot to mention that I regularly perform JM cell break and Garrett Thomas imagination coins. They work great and I would recommend to anyone but I want something with borrowed coins and pure sleight of hand

Hi dan, and welcome to the Café Smile

I love Garrett's effect, but do appreciate you here wanting to do more in coin magic. It's an excellent way to break up all the card stuff. I actually do it in the reverse, by now doing some card magic amongst my coin work, and it works well. Smile

There are loads of good gaff coin magic effects out there, but you mentioned "Sleight of Hand" here and really, that's the way to go. Smile It's nice to be able to borrow coins or provide regular coins of your own (that can be examined toward the same difference as to fairness), and just do some good magic. People love coin magic! Smile

I can do loads of stuff, but this is one of my favorite effects to perform for people…In fact, I have 3 effects I do most often that are all done with regular coins and via SOH. Easy enough to learn with some practice. Smile

Here's a couple that I offer:

…And heres my favorite… Smile

Hope this helps and again, welcome… Smile

Check out Gregory Wilson's On the Spot. It's all impromptu ungimmicked stuff and there's a few great coin routines in there. What's particularly good about those routines is that the size of coin doesn't matter. I've done the coins across from there with the smallest coins available and still get great results. You'll also learn a load of other great non-card stuff using napkins, lipstick etc.

Honestly the books suggested above are a good resource from there learn a couple vanishes a transposition and a penetration. And you will have some great tools to do a one coin routine with.

Andy...I would appreciate it if you would return my copy of "ROUTINED MANIPULATION" (Lewis Ganson). You've had it for a year. I wrote you last summer, and you have not replied. If you remember, I sent you a half dozen "silks" for the "Slydini" Knots, as a gift!

Dick I sent that back to you about a year ago. Sorry you didn't get it in the mail. I will go ahead and find a replacement copy for you.

Hello Andy!

Thanks for your quick reply. I wondered what had happened. In June, I "left home" for Scout Camp where I spent the summer. I was too busy up there (I 'run' training course in outdoor camping skills for young adult leaders)to do much corresponding. When I returned, I was BUSY unpacking and storing camp equipment. Shortly after that, I spent the rest of the fall in the Veterans Hospital (cellulitis). When I returned home, I was busy CONVALESCING! I've kept my sanity by checking in to the Café every day. Just recently, I've begun to get back to "normal".

Sorry to say, but the book never arrived. Over the years on the road, I've had mail get lost, but this is the first time it has happened when I'm "home".

I'm constantly loaning books, as I feel that a book on a shelf is not 'earning its keep'. If I hadn't stayed with magic, I may well have become a librarian.

I do hope you can find a copy, as I need to losn it out again! (I have several young fellows that I am mentoring.)

I have seen many similar comments and I don’t understand them. IF you are indeed "...bad with coins" then this is a very easy routine to mess up, as there are a few things happening in the spectator's hands. I have a feeling that a lot of folks who are inexperienced with coin magic are exposing a lot more than they realize with Imagination Coins.

It would be wiser to get better with coins by practicing and performing more basic routines before trying to work in the spectators' hands. It requires a good bit more audience management and finesse than most coin beginners realize.

I'm really not trying to be too negative with this post; just telling it as I see it.

Thank you.

Why not just start with getting Bobo's book, it probably has everything you really need to last you years.
