I remember years ago seeing a hank box routine (wasn't called a hank box back then) where the catch phrase was something like "that's why the hole is there". Anyone know of this or any hank box routines? Thanks!

There's a decades old hardbound book by Glenn Gravatt titled Jap Box Tricks that might be available from one of the used book dealers.

In his Mini-Mysteries Book 2 collection, Spellbinder has an e-Book on "The Hank Box - Revisited" which contains a variety of routines and possibilities for the old Hank Box, as well as plans for how to build one and how to produce livestock and even your assistant from one.

Back in thr early '50s, Gene & Jo EISENBARTH played the Naval Air Station in Norfolk,VA. (Gene's father had owned the SHOWBOAT "COTTON BLOSSOM" which had sunk in the Ohio River). They were old pro's. from Showboat days. Gene opened with a JAP BOX. One 18" white silk, and the box. --Great!
Thakt was the only time that I've seen a Jap Box used

Here are a few youtube clips of the silk box in use.
Kohtaro Fujiyama's 5 minute silk box act http://youtu.be/1d2PDO9Aq74 Starting at the 24 minute mark is a 4 minute silk box act http://youtu.be/fdEk0vF7_kE Start at 3 min into the clip is a brief silk box routine, although the whole act is worth watching. http://youtu.be/M_p2a8FiJQI Enjoy, Bob

Hi Harry!
What sold Gene Eisenbarth's Jap Box presentation, was that it was short (maybe 2 minutes) and he would just 'DROP' the silk inside and IMMEDIATELY show box empty. There was no "stuffing" the silk into the boz~

Dick that handling it a must. As I watch the videos I see the careful plucking of silks apparently close to one side instead of from the middle of the box where one would naturally find an object. I've never liked the tucking of a silk into such a large box. I think it telegraphs special compartment. The thick walls also tend to telegraph the modus to an intelligent observer. Still the videos have me thinking and I have a Hank box on the shelf (from the days when it had a more politically incorrect name!). Nice to get the brain working on something old again!

After playing with the box for a while (aided much by expert Café input-thanks again) I believe the entire presentation would appear far more innocent if the box had a good excuse to exist as a container for another trick, and used for its purpose several tricks later. Thoughts???

I am really getting tired of hearing these comments that magic props need a justification for being in existence. Go back and read the number of responses to this non-sense.
I think you should maybe justify why you think you are a magician, why you will be doing tricks at a function someplace, why you think you need to justify everything, and yet not justify why you are here. And stop playing with box, you have not justified why you think it is a box. |

Now that that is off my chest, you justify the reasoning through your story line, whatever you create yourself.

Bill I agree with you. If you could do real magic why the heck would you need a case to hold your things, a box or bag to put items in, or any other apparatus? Real magic would be done in thin air without any cover. People watching magic shows expect some items that aren't really normal.

Think of a wedge shape on one long side--much like the design currently used for some tables and illusion bases--there was plenty of room for a silk or two (depending upon the bulk of the fabric). Julie, I've never seen a Haenchen designed box. What an interesting design. I'd love to see on and maybe even play with it. I love good design.
Mine is pretty standard single-flap design. sides are maybe an 1/2 inch thick. It really doesn't have much capacity. I'd have to use some pretty thin silks (as do the performers in the links apparently). Mine is old as the hills but very well made in varnished natural wood. it is on the small size with not a great deal of capacity. I haven't a clue who made it.

I think it was Dan Ford who produces the best Hank Box I've ever seen. He demos it by dropping three 3" sponge balls into it and they instantly vanish. His handling of the prop is perfect! Abbott's makes a similar prop that is quite good.

I was on Owen Magic's list for their Hank Box. I gave up on them five years ago after being on their "wait list" for five years. Alan even said he should make these again because he had over 60 magicians asking him to make them one. I don't bother with Owen Magic anymore.
