I just saw this movie for the first time. I heard a lot of hype from friends about how great the movie is and whatnot.
I decided to check it out for a first hand experience and I'll say this, for an independent film, it was top notch. For the smaller budget they had they had some great CGI work in it. The plot was good. I thought it was very interesting how it worked in the many different things going on (I don't want to give it away for anyone who hasn't seen it). The pace of the movie was one to keep you involved, but not reveal that much for you to predict the outcome of the end within the first 10 minutes, that seems to be the trend in most films coming out today. Aside from the "technical" aspects of the film is the meaning behind it. I have talked with people and they have tried to tell me that the movie is full of deep philosophical meaning and whatnot. I don't understand why people try to do this with every movie they see but this movie does deserve some thought. Is Donnie truly insane? Was it a dream? With the whole issue of space travel the thought comes to mind if Donnie was in a wormhole himself or if there was sort of "wormhole" in his mind. Or even this, was their a higher power (which they did hint at being God) that was controlling all this just to toy with Donnie? Despite what they have said I do not think there is at all a deep philosophical meaning of this movie. I talked to a friend tonight who has studied psychology and she agrees. Nonetheless it is a really good movie. I was incredibly surprised afterwards. The main negitive thing I would have to say in the film is the language. They like to throw the 'F' word around more then it needed to be used at all and there were a couple parts of the movie that were vulgar and didn't need to be included at all. Despite those shortcomings it was interesting and I think if you do enjoy watching different films, or looking for the hidden meanings behind most movies, then you will enjoy this one. Anyone else have any thoughts on it? Chris |

Donnie Darko was one of my favorite movies of all time. It's kind of like music in that everyone gets something different from it. I thought the ending was awesome in that he chose to die and let his girlfriend live. Alternate realities are definitely a trip. I also thought the whole teen angst thing was pretty well done. I would highly recommend to rent it on dvd and watch the music video afterwards. It kind of ties the whole thing together.

I liked it. Great example of a first-time director throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks. There's comedy, satire, horror, science-fiction, and psychological thriller elements scattered throughout, seemingly by whim. Some may say this makes the movie 'unfocused', but I admire films that defy classification.

First off, FORGIVE me for any incorrect things here, it's been a long time since I watched and analized the movie and stuff.. To get the movie you REALLY have to get the DVD, and goto the website to get all the deleted scenes, commentary, extra stuff and the actual book "Philosophy of time travel"(its on websites and on the DVD I believe... it answers a lot). Basically, the orignal theme was MUCH more in tune with aethism vs. God, and whether Donnie believed in god and was a servent of god. They really cut most of the scenes with the psychiotrist out that really sold home the values of the movie. By cutting it out they left more of a mystery which they felt would do better in theaters and stuff. The basic Idea was that for whatever reason(god), there is a "tangent world" that is created by an "artifact"(the engine). Then there is a "Living Reciever"(Donnie) that has to use his special powers(strength among other things) to guide the artifact back to the real world. If he doesn't the tangent universe will turn into a black hole and destroy all of humanity. Everyone but donnie is actually manipulated into making him take himself and the artifact back in time to the real universe. Anyone killed in the tangent universe(the bunny) is blessed with a bunch of powers, like time travel and stuff so he can direct donnie into going back in time with the artifact. Although the book links it, the living reciever(donnie) DOES NOT NESSACARILY HAVE TO BE KILLED by the artifact upon returning to the actual universe. So if donnie had been in another part of the house and still had been chosen to be the living reciever, he wouldn't have been choosing death at the end. Anyway, This can all be found here: http://www.tangent-universe.org/dump/time_travel.html So anyway my theory is that Roberta Sparrow was actually caught in a Tangent universe as the Living reciever, but she got out of it and was still alive so she wrote the book. Perhaps.... I really like donnie's path from being completly messed up to being happy, and it was probably better for him to die and be happy, then live forever depressed like he was. One of the great things was that donnie finally began to understand that he was a servent of god and that dieing wouldn't mean that it was the end for him. I really think this was a great idea for a movie that god cut down too much in the editing room, it left watchers with too many questions... Or perhaps that is better... who's to say. Even if you don't care about the philosophy one way or another, watch the movie because it is very entertaining and has a really eeri quality to it. I really liked it! |

I had no idea there was such a following. nice see folks projecting such ideas into a movie.
I took the film at simple 'inner' images and issues.

IMO, no good film should have to rely on outside artificial means to be explained (such as DVD extras, books, the Internet). If it's not in the film, it's not about the film. As a pure escapist blend of genres and ideas, Donnie Darko works. But I'd hate to see all the pseudo-philosophical dissection that happened with the Matrix series happen to it.
