I definitely am new to this, but learning quickly as I go.
The act I'm doing will be at a renaissance faire. My character is a silent/masked character, so I am having to work my routine with another actor giving a cue to start. I may end up having two rough scripts -- one act for children, and one intended for adults. I have a lot to learn, some examples: Gauging distance. Sometimes close tricks like coins or cards work well with the children. For the adults, I'm probably going to need to resort to stuff I can do from a distance. |

Welcome mlts22,
I started my apprenticeship with no experience. Just do what you feel comfortable with at first. You will quickly gain experience and confidence. You've come to the right place. -Mary Mowder |

Welcome mlts22! I used to do lots of ren faires. Unfortunately. most of the nearby ones have died out. However, there are Celtic faires where ren is welcome. My focus is on steampunk and other Victorian reenactment.
My experience is that cards generally don't work well for kids. BTW, do you have period cards? They are available. One trick I do is a period version of fast and loose. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......rum=26&1 Are you going to be a real magician or something like a jester? |

Most importantly, at the faire, I am making sure I don't step on toes of the professional magicians who are there to make a living (this is a hobby for me, but for them, magic acts pay the bills, and my first priority above everything else is not to interfere with their schedules or audience draw.)
My magic routine is along the lines of a fantasy character, where magic is part of the character as he wanders around on the acting troupe's schedule. There are some events (a children's show) where I have some scripts I'm working on. Hopefully I can expand from there. My role is somewhat of a jester (but for the elven/fae court) and part of a troupe, rather than a free-standing act. Because of this, I plan to have some impromptu tricks (basic coin stuff, for example), as well as the above mentioned children's show. My eventual hope is that I can eventually set up a (more or less) free-standing act that segues to the other people's shows, but first, I need to learn physicality, get some tricks down, and pretty much work on the basics. This is also made difficult by the fact that my character is silent, so all communication is done via body language. However, I always enjoy a challenge. |
