I have an iPhone 5 and have owned iPhones for the last five years or so. With my current rate plan, I have unlimited data usage with my iPhone. My plan is with AT&T. The question I have is whether or not I'll have to buy an additional data plan so that the iPad can access the Internet. I have a wireless network here at home, so I was wondering if the iPad will be able to tap into that without having to set up an additional account with AT&T for the new iPad. I guess what I'm asking is whether or not iPads come Internet-ready and you just have to turn it on and hook it up to your own wireless network.

An Ipad can be Wifi or it can be WIfi and cell data.
The cell capable ones are more expensive and you have to buy a separate plan for them. They work on both Wifi and cell data networks. The wifi only ones are cheaper but can only access the innerweb when you have access to a wifi network. Check your ATT plan, none are really unlimited anymore. unlimited data still has a limit. No limit on amount of data per month but if you exeed say 10GB they throttle your connection. |

If you have an unlimited data plan, you can connect your iPad to your iPhone via bluetooth and use the Internet anywhere. No need for a separate plan.

(For Verizon, I believe it's $30/month.) Work-arounds always pop up, in the form of apps that allow that functionality without the monthly fee. The general term for doing what Stone suggested is "tethering." Tethering apps often require you to "jailbreak" your iPhone, which is a way of removing many manufacturer- and carrier-implemented limitations on the hardware. It's not illegal (in the US at least), but it does violate terms of service and can void warrantees. There are sometimes also non-jailbreak-requiring tethering apps, but carriers and/or Apple do their best to limit their functionality. It's a bit like whack-a-mole. I moved off the iOS platform many years ago, so I don't know the current state of things. As it turns out, the two main reasons I went to Android were: (a) the ability to load any apps I want, not just those from Google's app store, and (b) the ability to tether another device to my phone without paying a monthly fee. Food for thought, when it comes time to get your next smartphone. |

Thanks for the informative replies! They were really helpful. I'll let you know what I decide to do regarding the purchase of an iPad.

I've decided to not purchase an iPad or any other tablet. Seems that they are falling by the wayside in popularity. Smartphones are becoming bigger and bigger, so I've decided to stick with just owning a smartphone (iPhone) for now. The next iPhone is supposed to have a larger screen size to rival that of the Samsung Galaxy phone.
