Any comments on his very specific reactions to his own powers and how mentalists might use that concept to their own advantage?
The performer's after-reaction is a moment I often see missed, and could reinforce both character and verisimilitude.

Very funny, unfortunately we don't get much of that sort of thing here in Spain. We had a comedy mind reader act in the UK years ago but I can't recall the name.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

That's a great bit ... Jay Leno is pretty funny, but nobody compares to Carson.
To answer your question about Carson's reactions, he is reacting as if he gets the answers using "psychic powers" but he does not know what the actual question is until he opens the envelope. Might be interesting to see a real performance like that. I don't think I've ever seen a mentalist claim to have powers that work exactly that way. Also, I'd love to get a "Carnac the Magnificent" costume like that, but only "old folks" like me would get the joke since Carson has been off the air for 22 years. |

Is he happy, sad or indifferent that he got the answer? Does he think the audience appreciates him? Does it make him tired or give him more energy? Are some answers harder than others? Does having the psychic powers enhance his self-esteem? If he were wrong could he survive it? Is he happy that he's at the final envelope? When he's right does it prove he's better than anyone else? Is he holding back or is this the peak of his powers?

Landmark- I think you're reading too much into the character and the act.

But Bob, I'm sure you're read all of landmark's concerns in the Pennies forum. Daily.

This is a great spoof of mentalism. The greatest element is that the audience knows it's a spoof and therefore is happy to support it or even groan in dismay when deserved. Not much Johnny and Ed interplay in this segment, but that used to be a highlight. Also a great way to take shots at your bosses, newsmakers, and celebrities in roast-style shots.
I also remember when Larry Flynt's magazine had their own mentalism spoof, "The Amazing Foreskin!" |

Off topic, I guess, but this is one of my all time favorite Carson sketches:

That's a great one Bob.
I actually posted the thread originally in the Pennies forum. The mods moved it to here. I complained. It's still here. Oh well.
