Is there a card effect that use 3 to 10 of torot cards?

Witch of Glastonbury uses three. Normally these are gaffed, but it could be done with standard cards if you changed the handling a little bit.

Docc Hilford has an old & absolutely brilliant effect called "Cheating Death" which uses a short handful of Tarot. A real worker.

There's a great tarot routin in Rick Maue's The Book of Haunted Magick that uses 6 tarot cards. Great effect and baffling.
The Book of Thoth by Steve Minch is THE go to book IMO. It's all tarot effects and great ones at that. Both are OOP but you can query in the for sale section. |

Would the book of Thoth be a good resource if you own a deck that only contains the major arcana?

Yes, many of the effects use only majors, and this is a good way to get into tarot. Learning 22 cards is less daunting as well. But if you go further you'll find spectators care more about the cards than the tricks, which is a good thing. Eventually, you'll want to invest the time in a full deck if you really are drawn to tarot effects.

I think laymen notably in the bible belt, are scared of tarot cards and a trick or effect with the major arcana goes over better than a reading. Different people in other places may like readings better. Anyway, the tarot trumps bikes any ol' day of the week. If you want to be spooky lol.

Spellbinder has a collection of effects performed with various packs of Tarot cards, some gaffed and some not gaffed. The collection is described in his "Crafty Shoppe of Little Horrors" section under the name "Invisible Tarot."

Is Paul talking about this, or is it a tongue in cheek reference to tarot readings? Hard to catch the sarcasm or lack thereof on this medium sometimes.

Could be way off, but would guess Paul is suggesting, why do tricks with tarot cards when you can do readings.

But my point does have a serious side to it. Most lay people have never seen (outside of movies or TV) a set of tarot cards. Hard to imagine I know, but most people do not walk on the shadowy side of the road. This lack of knowledge can be troublesome when it comes to doing tricks with tarot. An ambitious card routine with tarot (I'm sure someone has done it at some point) is far less impressive because for all the spectator knows, there may be a dozen King of Cups (or whatever) in a tarot deck. They have no idea there's only one. The way to negate this is to explain how a deck of tarot is very similar to a deck of playing cards with 4 suits etc., but really, by the time you've done that, you might as well have used playing cards in the first instance.

I thought that was the case, but it never hurts to clarify. Now was Josh being tongue in cheek about the tossed out tarot deck?
