Hi everyone!
My name is Atte and I'm 17 years old high school student from Finland. Before saying anything else I have to point out that English is not my mother tongue and therefore it's far from perfect. I've done magic for about 5 years now as an hobby and I've also read Café for a while. I have done couple gigs (mostly kids birthday parties and free shows in my high school parties)in last couple of years but I think magic will stay as interesting and time-consuming hobby for me, which will definitely not prevent me from doing gigs, paid or free. Card magic was "the big thing" for me for a long time but nowadays I have ~25min comedy stage show and a lot of close-up stuff ready to go, also for kids parties although kids are not my favorite audience to perform for. One of the newest things I'm interested in is busking, and when I will have more time a couple of weeks I will try to hit the streets of Helsinki city. I know that I'm not ready as a magician or as a human but I'm always ready to learn new and I'm taking small steps everyday to reach the perfection. But before we all reach the perfection we'll see in the Café! ~Atte

Paive Atte!
I'm a Swede/Norwegian--so forgive the spelling! Your "American" English is just fine! I don't think that you will have any serious problems communicating. There are a lot of "Suomis" where I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. So, I've picked up a few of the "courtesy" words. Finlandia University is located in Houghton,Michigan, and is considered one of the top engineering schools in the U.S. My old friend, the late Julius Sundman was, if I remamber correctly, from Helsinki. Julius wrote a lot of magic books (in Suomi) you may have heard of him. Otto Leisner, is about your age. He is a recent Café member. We have communicated briefly, and he seems to have somewhat similar interests as you have. He says that his performing, so far, has been mostly for family and friends. I'm not that familiar with Finland's geography, so, you may live MANY kilometers from him. He is in Oslo. If you would like to contact him, PM me, and I'll send you his email. When I was your age (I'm 82, and a retired professional magician) I was always eager to meet others intrested in magic. Yr's, 'til the deck is shufled! My second post in the Café and I'm already suprised how cool people and stories you an find here.
I live in Espoo which is a neighbor of our capital, Helsinki. Oslo is quite far from here (1000km or so) but I may still PM you Dick and Otto when I come back from my holiday. I think I have read at least one of Sundman's magic books when I was just started doing magic and my only source was a local library. Could not have been a bad book if I'm now here Kiitos! ~Atte

Welcome Atte,
I also perform Close-Up for Adults and Stand-Up for families and Kids. I find that each kind informs my understanding of the other. They feed a different part of my interest but both are fun. I'll see you in "The Little Darlings" and "Table Hoppers and Party Strollers". -Mary Mowder |
