Left-handed Squier Jazz bass; getting shipped out now, I should have it tomorrow. My father-in-law's giving me a spare amp he's got sitting around. I've never played guitar before, but I have played the piano, and drums.

Good for you Esn! It's never too late.
As for me, I will contribute to the pleasure of all the people who I love by promising not to buy or attempt to play a bass guitar.

Joking aside, bassists get more gigs and get invited to more jams than do guitar players, just because there's fewer of you. Good choice!

Did you hear about the drummer who locked his keys in his car?
It took him four hours to get the bass player out. |

Heh, well, I used to play drums, too, so I guess I'm the butt of my own jokes. Anyway, got the bass yesterday, got a nice Fender amp from my father-in-law this morning (he had a spare in storage he gave to me) and swung by the music shop for a good strap, soft case, stand, and a book or two. Then between the book and youtube videos, got some lessons and practice. And now my fret fingers hurt. The callouses will get there eventually.
Although I do read music, I'm finding bass tabs are way too easy to read; I'm a bit worried it's too much of a crutch. Of course, since they don't really give the length of the notes well, I do have a reason to translate the notes to the strings. I'm too used to keyboard, though, so I guess having both notes and tabs will be the best for now.

Tabs can be a crutch, but if you use them only to get started, you'll probably find that you're using your ears and mind very quickly, and you'll have a basic (tabbed) groove to fall back on when you need it.
