I completely agree as well Lando!
I once worked for a corporation that was paying for all of my meals whilst I was consulting on a project in Tucson,Az. Cracker Barrel was adjacent to my suite. I went there on my first evening only. I could've eaten three meals a day there every single day for four months. I chose to give my business to the local businesses instead. Cracker Barrel is overrated and outdated. I appreciate the headsup on this Lando. |

What struck me is that the fellow who may or may not have been homeless did not even request food let alone a corn muffin, he just wanted some condiments (mayonnaise and some tarter sauce). I'm not familiar with Cracker Barrel, but in many places those things are in little packets to which one can help oneself.

I understand that kindness and compassion is important but this employee who is also a veteran, has an obligation to hold himself to a higher standard and follow the rules that he is governed by the company he works for and who has hired him to provide a service. He is a veteran, so, he has to hold himself to a higher standard for many reasons. One of those reasons is because many people look up to him. Though he may not consider himself a hero, many others do and look up to him, so he has an influence on other people. This means, he must hold himself to a higher a standard. Plus, given that he is a veteran, he knows full well the importance of following the rules. Not only that, Cracker Barrel simply cannot afford to save the world. It is ultimately not a charity, but a business. Some companies may feel obliged to give to charity for PR reasons, but ultimately in the end, businesses are not charities and every employee has to earn his or her keep and follow the rules. Employee duties are also to ensure the operation of the business so that shareholders get their return on investment. That's why he was hired. Compassion and kindness has it's place too, but again, Cracker Barrel cannot save the world and if you give away food to one person, many others might come looking for free food. But nothing in this world is free.

But, I hope he gets it because he is an elderly man and it's tough on the elderly to have to work at their age. Their are many like him and he is not alone. That could be easily any one of us when we are older. This could me or you when we are old. It is also an illustration as to why working till the day you die is not a good retirement plan and why saving and investing while you are young is so important. But, even when you save and invest, it's still no guarantee you will not be penniless when you are older because anything can happen. But, one should try and remain disciplined and set goals and create a flexible plan that has contingencies and worst case scenarios in mind so that if worst case scenarios happen, you are ready to deal with them. Heck, even though I am young, I have already met with a funeral parlor to plan my funeral, not because I plan on dying anytime soon, but it's best to plan for the worst and be ready for the worst but hope for the best. The fact that my mother in law had her funeral planned out made life so much easier on my wife and I though it was hard to lose her. The motto I learned in the military is plan and be ready for the worst and hope for the best. It's one of my mottos I live by now that I am a civilian. Having an emergency cash reserve comes in handy for unexpected Murphy's Laws kind of events like the unexpected death of a loved one in your family and falls in line with planning and being ready for the worst. It seems my mother in law had the same philosophy given that she had her funeral planned out many years before her passing away.

Hmmm We get an old age pensions at age 65, which comes from national insurance tax that we have to pay. There private pensions and military pensions etc and military pensions from Ireland are very good.

Sorry, but my parents brought me up right in that respect. I live in a working class neighborhood, where there are lots of small businesses, mom and pop stores and the like. I hang out in the local pizza joint. I've often witnessed needy people come in, and the owners would give them a slice. It's called community.

Would it be right just for employees to decide to give away anything they want to whoever they want whenever they want? At what point does community become theft?

In regards to, "Why I will never ever ever ever step into a Cracker Barrel restaurant", I'm curious. Have you ever been in a Cracker Barrel previously?

I have friends and family that work with Cracker Barrel and they say it's a great place to work. I love it.
Is it ok for all Cracker Barrel employees to give away food? Or just ok for certain ones? Of course not. This is not about money, it's about doing the right thing toward ALL the other employees. Treating everyone the same. Even Joe himself said they had every right to let him go. Cracker Barrel did the right thing and I'm amazed at those that think they didn't. Tom
