Is this an appropriate item for strolling magic?

It seems to me that would depend a lot on the context. I can imagine parties, etc., where the flashes would help advertise your presence and add to the general atmosphere. And I can imagine other gatherings where the flashing would make everybody uncomfortable. So it seems like a lot of the answer to your question would rely on where you are and what you're trying to do there.

I think its best use is in close-up strolling environments. I used it a few times for platform/stage work--from watching the video of the performances afterwards the flash blended in too well with the stage lighting. It didn't have a punctuation on it sort of speak....
It clearly has more appeal and impact in a close-up, strolling setting. Enjoy it....incidentally you will want to use the foot switch version if you are doing this on a consistent basis in closeup work. rr |

I thought it was advertised as not having a foot switch. Is that a custom modification, or will the foot switch option come with the standard item?

You may have to check with John Cornelius to see if he sells the foot/ankle switch anymore. About 7-10 years ago when I saw him lecture again, he only had the belt model that you operated by kicking your elbow inward.
I still prefer the ankle model which I use all the time for strolling. There's a camera card trick called 'film flam' that I use it with, as well as numerous other applications. It may be hard to notice the 'flash' for stage work. If you're doing an outdoor strolling event and it's a sunny day, a white shirt of fairly thin fabric would make the 'flash' more prominent. naturalturn http://www.raywongmagic.com

Joshua, if you're interested, send me a PM and I'll explain a recent unpublished idea I have for the FISM Flash.

My friend Mike uses this in strolling and it works wonderfully for him. The foot switch is the way the original FISM flashes were operated but they did away with that and went for the elbow thing. Personally, I don't use it but from what I hear check Ebay and magic auctions to try to find a flash with a foot switch.

Is this the "Flash Burst?" Is this a knock-off of the original, or is it different in some way that makes it better or worse for strolling/close-up?

I know the guy that created the flash burst, and it is not a knock-off. It is smaller and is better for a strolling environment (not that FISM flash is bad; it is wonderful if you have the pocket space). I like it a lot.

According to John Cornelius, he stopped making the flash because of the rip-off. I think his work is ripped-off more than anyone’s.
