Just a heads up to all who live in the NYC Area:
The 98th Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest in beautiful Coney Island!!!! Last year, Joey Chestnut broke his own world record with an incredible 69 hot dogs eaten in just 10 minutes. Can anyone defeat him? The Women's Champion, Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas, put away a seemingly impossible 45. Is there a new contender on the horizon? http://www.nathansfamous.com/contest/mainevent

We watch this on ESPN every year. It's like a car wreck...you just can't look away. It's amazing to see these folks eat.

Joey says the rain slowed him down in going for the record. Those soggy buns must have added weight.

I believe Chestnut beat Kobayashi when they competed against each other in the Nathan's event. No asterisk required.

So, therefore, all of Kobayashi's wins in other events where Chestnut did not compete should also be asterisked?
Would you apply this rule to all sports and competitions? |

My point is just that if some of the best in the world are not being allowed to compete at Nathan's, then the win is against a lesser field. You have to recognize that.

Of course it's trivial. Many of the things we argue about here are.
My point is that I know of no other competition in which winners are asterisked because another competitor may have been disqualified. I am going to eat a few more hot dogs now. |

Does anyone remember a nutty TV show which pitted a bear against a competitive eater, consuming hot dogs? Very funny. they were separated by a wire fence. The bear ate all his hot dogs in a few seconds and was looking at those hot dogs on the other side of the fence. Still laughing thinking about it. Lynn

Is this what you are talking about? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54S2EBoh1Gk http://munchies.vice.com/articles/kobaya......g-eater/ Excerpt: I look down at the four hot dogs on my plate and over at Kobi’s pyramid of dogs and think about the bear video. I ask him about it, and before he can answer, his manager steps in. "Kobi was very disappointed that he didn’t win," she says. "Well, it’s a gigantic grizzly bear," I say. "You may be the world’s greatest human eater, Kobayashi, but come on. The bear is huge." "I beat him in rehearsal," he says. ![]()

And here's the not-so-trivial or funny side of the story:
