I've done a little searching around here and haven't come up with much.
What should I do? Treat me like a total noob and tell me what you know about using the sites that make things easy, etc. Web builder? Squarespace? Go Daddy? I really appreciate any and all help with this. So far I only have a Facebook page.

Shared hosting like GoDaddy or Bluehost.
Create a site with Wordpress manually , not with fantastico. Find a theme, upload pics, create content. SEO with Yoast plugin. Security with BulletProof Security. Caching with W3 Total Cache. You will take weeks figuring it out with tutorials. Will be easier hiring someone else.

You can make a free, easy-to-build website with sites like Yola or Wix (if you want a special domain name or other upgrades, there is an extra fee). Those are great for website newbies.
But also read this: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......48525#12 And also do a search for "wix" in the "Tricky Business" area of the Café. - Donald

I use godaddy for all my sites and it is not that tough to figure out and is very cheap! Plus you can call them and they are very helpful over the phone with any questions you have.

I learned to code in HTML. That way I am assured it can be viewed on all devices ( for example, some devices cannot view flash sites). I know there are other ways around this but I don't know what they are!
Also, I have a contact form on my landing page. I get a lot of online responses through this form. |

Another plug for Wordpress. It's free and easy! Have someone give you a tutorial.
I actually disagree with the advice above about using Squarespace. You can build websites that look better with Wordpress, but you don't have to pay that big monthly fee. Avoid flashy website builders (like Squarespace), programs, or software who charge a monthly fee. - Kevin |

GoDaddy just for domain registration.
GoDaddy has slow oversold shared hosting. Shared hosting is like sharing a public toilet. You will catch something if the server is not setup properly. The php handler, modsecurity, cphulk, csf firewall, ie Your best option would be a Managed VPS

Theodore,
Chances are, you already answered your own question. Most people will try to cover every aspect of their business from doing all their own "design" work to trying to use Facebook to using free and lastly using free sources like Vistaprint to print all their promo materials. While I understand the need to save money I also believe in working smarter and not harder. If you hire a professional from the beginning, the investment is totally worth it. Depending of course if you get the right person who understands your target audience and market. That's another thing...do you HAVE a specific target audience? Are you trying to appeal to the masses or a specific group of people? Do you have a plan in place? Do you understand how everything ties together from SEO, to lead generation, to analytics and understanding the rules of engagement within social media and how to establish a brand? So before you get into ANY design or marketing decisions, sit down and map out WHERE you are trying to go, what are you willing to do and invest and what is your exit strategy should everything not work out. |

A Few things....
1. AVOID GODaddy like the ever loving plague.. They allow almost anything to be hosted there.. THOUSANDS of spammers use there servers to send emails out daily because they don't limit like other hosts do. ($10 a month = 125k emails a day sent). Because of this it is considered a "bad neighborhood" 2. Michael Eaton has a HUGE point you don't want to miss.... I talked to a guy today (plumber) who did his own SEO and used a site to buy backlinks at $5 a pop for a couple hundred backlinks each time. He considered it saving money. Google SMACKED HIM hard with a penalty. It's now going to cost him close to 50k to do the penalty recovery not to mention the lost leads because of 6 months of not ranking. 3. Get a SOLID plan together before you do anything
its ok.. balloon dogs don't bite
