Ummmm...
I would say a REALITY check... you wouldn't be in a "not booked" situation if you had a proper worldview of what was going on. All of the other items mentioned will fail f you don't have a proper perspective on your business. Reality check that I give clients. 1. Do you have a business plan that shows a path to grow? 2. Do you have a marketing plan? 3. How much time do you put into your marketing? 4. Do you have a realistic budget for marketing? so take that set and look at the other items They ALL fail to produce without the right plan I do about 4 consulting calls a week with business owners (ranging from self employed entertainers to large law firms with over 50 lawyers) The small companies that are hurting and NEED something to work NOW... 9 out of 10 times answer NO to all 4 questions
its ok.. balloon dogs don't bite

Having a good show is simply not enough, which I've been saying for years. Bookings come from the business behind the show. In my opinion while it's not typically any of these ones listed above, it is having the proper business operational system in place to make all of the items you've listed actually work and be effective with their individual role in the equation. This is what 90% of those lacking bookings are truly missing.

I just need a better...way out of my moms basement. That's the answer for most 'aspiring' magicians.

Nobody really knows is you are good or bad until they book you and see you preform a couple of times. If your good you get re-booked if not you don't. A You need to get a PR guy or learn how to sell. Then you need a STRONG presentation for the interview. You can have all the flashy promos, videos, biz cards, handouts you want (and they have purpose) but they only get you an interview, you or your PR guy then have to make the sale/close the deal....
Just my 2 cents. The old saying "its not the steak its the sizzle" really does apply... |

Phone that rings.

Elmer Wheeler, a very SUCCESSFUL SALESMAN, wrote a book EONS AGO, about salesmanship. He said, "Sell the Sizzle, Not The Steak!" MR HYDE---Most SUCCESSFUL old pro's. KNOW: "DOING the show, is your HOBBY. Getting PAID, to do it is your BUSINESS." The term, "SHOW BUSINESS" is 1/3 SHOW and 2/3 BUSINESS. --SHOW BUSINESS should be spelled $how Bu$ine$$. Those are old cliches, but, they are all TRUE! Now~! Go back and re-read Mike Clay's post, AGAIN, and AGAIN, and AGAIN! I know, and have known, a number of magicians who do a very average show, BUT, THEY ARE WORKING!!! A late magician told me that, "I can't do s**t! --but I can sell it!" Now, go back and read Mike Clay's post, AGAIN! I was about to sign off with a "'Good Luck", but, LUCK isn't "IT"!!! (Go back and read Mike Clay's post AGAIN!) ... publicity person. (That's actually my 2nd choice.)
What I really need is TIME. To get that, I'd have to quit my job. Then I wouldn't have the money for promoting. Sort of a Catch-22. |

Yeah I have a friend that is a Kid's Show magician and even he admits that he is no sleight of hand expert, nor does he really try to be, but he has great presentations for simple routines that work, and is a master marketer and is fully booked 20-30 times a month for just kids shows. HE has a van fully decked out for that venue with giant rabbits coming out of hats, logos, even a business card pouch on the window with each card in water-proof plastic. It a magic-mobile lol. I used to be a full-time kid's show magician as well and gave him a lot of tips 10 years ago. These days I still do them occasionally as well but more so restaurants, corporate, private parties, and festivals etc which have kids as well but not only kids. But his marketing is what keeps him getting booked as his performance skills are way more polished now and he still makes a great living doing kid's shows. Even if he did not have lots of chops yet he sold his show masterfully and everyone had a great time. Some magicians who were far more skilled put audiences to sleep while they just did what was perceived as "card stunts" (manipulation, ECM, etc) which kinda gets boring after awhile without a great presentation. He fakes until he made it and then made it rather quickly.

Yeah I know, I personally made sure I was very proficient in sleight of hand and presentation for awhile before ever trying to do a show. But later on I also used more simple methods so that I could focus on presentation 100% without having to worry about anything going wrong. But I still enjoyed the knuckle-busting stuff and challenging myself as well and still make it entertaining for the audience. But my friend proved also that it is not necessary to be a master sleight of hand artist to be successful and have a lot of fun doing it. He learned through experience and got better quickly as well in all aspects and his strongest point presentation got even more refined. Most of his work was in the marketing department and he learned a lot from Dave Dee and Eric Paul among many others.

I remember Dave Dee. I was a subscriber. Is he still around and is he still doing marketing for magicians?

I think he is his site still is up but not sure. I used to get mail offers and newsletters back in the 90's from him. He made his living marketing to magicians I think more so than laymen lol. But there is nothing wrong with that.

Dave Dee's line of products for magicians was sold to Jack Turk, who ran the company for a few years. Then earlier this year, Jack Turk sold the line of products to Brad Ross.

Thanks for the tip, my good man!
Posted: Jul 24, 2014 09:17 pm I followed the links until I finally arrived at the website. The one thing I found there that caught my eye was the Brad Ross magic trick booklet giveaway. It looks to be a colorful promotional item. But when I clicked on it where it said "click here", nothing happened. Then further Googling led me to an article that said "Beware of Brad Ross and David Farr", so I don't really know what to think. Seems like I'm running down a rabbit hole that's taking me nowhere.
