Hi Robert!
Kersten certainly makes a "production" of the "SS"!!! I thought it was the finest presentation that I've ever seen! I used the "SS" as an opener, years ago. I still use it with the vanishing square knot (Scot's "Discovery of Witchcraft" when I need to pad for time. I've never used it to close. After seeing Herr Kersten's presentation, hmmmm! Both years ago, and now, I've followed Al Baker's "thinking" and have only used four "silks". Kersten's use of six silks (especially 36" definitely makes the trick a bit flashier, AND, the three phases of the routine, with the variations, add punch! I'll dig into my silk knots file, and see what I have. I remember that you have Harold Rice's Encyclopedia, so I wont send THAT! (HEE HEE). but, I think I have some ideas filed on the knots.

Paul Potassy also has a nice routine for SS.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

Here is paul potassy and levent. both these gentlemen have thier ow twist to the effect. that is what I look for. I hate it to simply copy someones act. I don't feel well performing it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uXWeFBHFw8 paul potassy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyQCJ2ffvSY levent https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xoXbBqQWTk kersten some say use 3 different colors makes it more visible. my feeling is that with same color silks (look at the kersten video)the attention is on the knots. they vanish and appear. most of them use tables or chairs, for the street I like to use two women. to involve the audience and engage them into the act. it also builds more for a finale. so I am thinking how to make his streetwise. |

I like sympathetic silks, but the one challenge in a street performance to think about is the wind, especially vis-Ã -vis the set of 3 (or 2) silks that are secretly tied together at the beginning, and which are then switched around using a false count to conceal their attachment. If a puff of wind starts to blow in the early phase of the routine, it seems like it could kill the trick.

I like the paul potassys SS, I will look this up, or is there any other comedy SS using large scafs. I will start looking for polka dot scarfs as well about 90cm x 90 cm. cheers.

I'll ask a question: 1. If silks get tied together with a Granny Knot [versus the Square or Reef knot that can easily be upset]
how do you deal with that to get it undone? As far as I know it cannot get upset. 2. Another question; the classic way of dealing with the two sets is to lay them on chairs or tables. On the street do they get put on the pavement, or in 'helpers' hands, or what? About a month back here in New Zealand we had a one day "Day of Magic" in Auckland city with 41 magicians registered and as part of it Juno gave his demo of Sympathetic Silks followed up with explanation, backed up with a purchasable DVD and his set of special silks [special cloth he had commissioned, hard wearing, opposite corners colour coded - really nice] of his called "On The Silky Way of Magic" Juno Lecture 2014. He also showed how, with a gimmick, two silk could be looped together and then separated. The silk part was for sale with the DVD called "Quickie Silk". Juno's stage performance was wonderful to watch. It was a reminder of just how attractive it can be to watch silks being used. Even such an elementary thing as the old "hair tied around the corner of silk to pull a corner over sideways". Juno had a good number of magicians [including me] lining up after his lecture, keen to buy his gear! I need to keep learning the routine for myself.
The presentation makes the magic.

1) granny knot can be upset like a square knot. no problem. see for information the book of Slydini.
2) on the street I would not put the silks on the pavement. in would give 2 spectators a hat to hold. put the silks in the hat. they don't fly away to easy when the wind blows. alsways good to use people in your show on the street. makes the trick looks bigger. |

Routine is getting there Joel. Holland is ok. doing some christmas markt in germany.
Update routine: I use 4 Slydini silks and a hat. the 4 silks are counted. 2 silk go into a hat (spectator 2). with spectator 1 I do a short 3 phase Slydini silks routine. after the 3rd tie she holds the silks with the knots. I make a magic pass towards spec. 2. Then I show the silks tied. put them back in the hat. go to spec.1 and show silks undtied. go to spec.2 silks also untied. I am very happy with ths. |

Hi Robert!
I finally had time to watch Potassy, Levent, and Kersten! All three were a delight! I had watched s tspe of Slydini's Knotted Silks a year or so ago. His use of the two glasses was clever. DITTO: POTASSY'S SALT SHAKER!!! Thanks for sharing!
