Over the weekend I came up with a new stage show. It is a silent act. It is geared towards a family setting with kids above 7 (Since I will be using fire in the show).
Music hits... Cut and Restored Fan: A red fan is cut into pieces and in a flash it restores. This is an opening for me. I'm still trying to come up with a better opening as almost everyone has seen this effect before. Torch to Rose: I pretend the next act will be a fire-eating one. Then on an offbeat I change it into a rose. Appearing, Dancing, Vanishing canes: Waving the rose over my closed fist, I throw up the appearing cane, it stretches to full length in a flash. I then put down my rose on the table, switching it for a dancing cane. I play with it and make it dance, drop it, pick it up and clean it with a devil's hankerchief. I break the cane and make it disappear behind the hanky. I point to the table and from behind toss up the vanishing cane. Put away the cloth. Multiplying balls: The cane vanishes into a big silk. I use the silk to appear a white ball and carry one my multiplying ball routine from there, ending with a snowstorm. Card Manip: From the snowstorm, I appear a card. Carry on with the Card Manip routine. D'lite: lights go off..I will perform my D'lite routine ending with blendo bag. Take a big bow.......music stops....I carry on with my show with talking. Some help I would like from you guys, just some ideas. Should I start the act with Torn and Restored fan? It is a classic but it also shows I'm nothing special. What do you think? I am having trouble switching between the dancing cane and the vanishing cane. From my planned act, I drop the cane but I don't quite like that idea. Is there a good way to switch it? I'll have a table and table cloth. Please give your comments! Thanks! |

It is very difficult to tell what another person likes to perform. This a personal question. Personally, I don't care for any of the tricks you choose.
Everyone has not seen the Torn & Restored Fan. I never saw it and just recently found it on the Internet for sale. The only idea I can give you is a way to switch your cane; either use a 30" tabletop or a chair. As you place something down on the table, switch the cane. The cane is laying on prongs protruding from the rear of the table. As you move behind or place something behind the chair, switch the cane. The cane is clipped to the leg of the chair. Bill |

Is the D'lite routine strong enough to finish on? The cane routine sounds stronger. Maybe finish on that. If you appear the cane near the beginning then put it down behind something you can pick it up at the end for the dancing and vanish without having to worry about a switch. You may need to dim the lights for the dancing cane so doing the D'lites before it would give the perfect excuse. I wouldn't make the cane reappear after the vanish.
The torch to rose might be better as a first trick as it is a quick flash effect and the fire will grab peoples' attention. Throw a piece of flash paper or wool in the air first to make sure they're watching. Maybe torch to cane instead. I hope my ideas have helped. Keep thinking, you can't write a new show in just one weekend. Phil |

How long does this set run?

Thanks for all the great ideas!
I haven't actually timed it perfectly but it runs around 4-5mins. phil, The reason why I wanted the cut and restored torch is because it is also a rather quick trick as well, and there's a flash too. But I also like the idea of using fire to capture attention. How do you suggest I connect the transformed rose to the next routine? :) |

I would be afraid to use fire in your act. With that night club burning down not to long ago. Fire laws are being more and more enforced. I wouldn't want to take the chance anymore.
My opening number had candles , torchs, fire bowl and flash paper, and other fire gimmicks mix with other magic. But now I am trying to come up with a new opener. It isn't easy, after doing the same opening for over 20 years! Ray |

True. You would need an alternative for venues where for can't use fire. I'm currently putting a fire magic routine together, about 3/4 of the venues I currently work will allow it. (I know this because I do a fire juggling routine currently, which sometimes needs to be taken out.)I have my old non-fire opening for the other venues. Whether it is worth putting a routine together that you can't do everywhere is up to you. I guess for me its a little self indulgent. I've wanted to do a fire routine with loads of flashes and bangs for years.
