Who knew that playing Jeopardy would lead me on this path? One of the questions I had recently chosen was the first successful reintroduction of an Orca whale (Killer whale) that was found as an orphaned calf in US waters. The baby Orca was alone and it was found was separated from her Canadian pod. Orcas are individually identified not only by their unique tails but by their voices. Springer, as the calf was named had a "Canadian accent" and so would never be able to join a US pod as she was considered a foreigner. Pods only mate with foreigners but do not allow them to join them. Springer, was only a baby and it would be years before she could mate and was in danger of being killed as Orcas are social animals. Due to her lonliness she rubbed against boats in the harbor for companionship.
It took specialist from both the US and Canada working together and they successfully reunited her with her pod - the first in history!!!!

Now years later, Springer has a calf and at this time it's not known whether her baby is male or female and there was a naming contest. I chose Discovery after doing research on names for Orcas and most are named after the area in which they reside. I chose the name for Discovery Pass and also for the opportunity for humans to discover more about these majestic animals. I received a email that the name I chose was short-listed! They will pick the top three names and it will go to a scientific committee for the final choice.
