Hi anyone doing the above.
I´m thinking of starting. I have the book safety Magic for children. Although an excellent book I feel that there is something missing. I have an Idea for using Annikos black and white ( for those that don´t know it, you tear up some white paper and when opened out there are some figures. You then burn them in a bowl and reach in and take out what looks like black charred paper when you open it the figures are restored but in black. Ok the theme being children playing with matches or fire and getting burnt and a magician comes along and helps them but, as a reminder they must remain black. What are your views on this. Is it too gruesome or maybe could be used against black kids by racials ie. you must have played with fire. I may have taken this too far in my feelings but, there seems too much PC these days _________________ Magiker

I don't think it's too gruesome; in fact, I like the idea.
Why not finish with something along the line that, as a warning, they remain charred? You are right about one thing, though: There is far too much PC around these days. (Although, being of Italian ancestry, I can neither sing, nor do I belong to the Mafia! ) cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

I think the idea is just fine, though you might want to be very careful how you present the effect, as 'fire' magic and kids don't mix well.
Maybe somehow you could use 'pretend' fire, but that's only a thought. And you are right, too much 'PC', and a lot of 'over' sensitive people.

Steve the idea is that I get the message across that They don`t play with fire.
In the book Safety Magic For Children (Karl Wagner) he actually uses flames from book. Peter Doesn’t the Mafia make people sing?

Having served as a firefighter for 28 years and a magician. Safety Magic is a better booking program than magic.
Some "pros" claim that this type of school assembly program can command 5 times the pay compared to what a magician would receive. There are numerous fire safety messages which can be incorporated into magic and if it’s entertaining, it will sell! Regarding the above trick... With today’s quickness of one screaming discrimination, I think if the question needs to be raised, then don’t do it. Why chance being labled a racist? It’s not worth it and there are so many other alternative tricks with much more appropriate messages or another way to make the same message. If you’re going to do something like what was stated above, consider putting a rabbit in a box, use flash paper, make your statement and pull out a skunk. The Kids will tell you it’s a skunk, have fun with it, reinforce the message, put the skunk in the box, strike the fire alarm, and have a fire fighter figure appear and rescue the rabbit. (A whole series of messages are stated, "Don’t play with fire or you’ll get burnt", "If a fire occurs get out." and "Notify the fire department, and let the fire fighters with their specialized skill extinguish the fire.") One could easily convert "Firehouse Frenzy" (A Run-Rabbit-Run Effect) trick where the fire dog is trying to get the fire fighters to rescue one of the pups that escaped a house fire started by a lit candle. There are many other routines like this, which would be much more appropriate to kids. Kids Stuff books by Fran Marshall address this topic also!

DenDowhy.
I understand what you mean but, I don´t think that I would be called a racist, I´m just thinking what some kids are like these days. Also we don´t have any skunks in Sweden. But I like the suggestions. Thanks And welcome to the cafe

Opps,
Sweden, a different country, a different culture. It might work there, but don't try it in the inner cities. Most of the chicken fast food joints which flew the confederate flag (Part of the francise look) burnt to the ground in my neighborhood. People take the Black/White issue to far and much to serious. Good luck on your fire safety message. By the way, a spring skunk would be a conservational piece, give it some serious thought. If I could appear a Velocirapter, I would and they are not around but what an impact it would make! It would scare the bajeebers out of the pre-schoolers!

The only reason I am bringing this thread to the top of the little darlings is for nostalgic purposes. I believe it was the first post ever made on the little darlings in 2001. It is interesting to reflect as we come up to the 12th. anniversary of The Magic Café. When this post was made, there were no smartphones, no Facebook, no Twitter, no Google and few people had websites. Yellow Pages was still the main form of advertising our services. Some of the children we entertained at birthday parties in those days could now be married with children of their own. Food for thought!!! JR

On my black and white television, the magic shows were with Chan Canasta and Al Koran with a ten minute slot, and David Berglas and Robert Harbin with a thirty minute slot! At birthday parties it was common for the conjurer(as they were normally known in those days) to do a magic show followed by a film show of cartoons using an 8mm projector. Hand shadows would often follow using the same projector! Here I am doing a show around 1962: JR |
