I am prepping for a show later this year and would like to perform some routines or effects that involve stories. I am wanting to base this around true history mixed with shock magic. I am well versed in most styles of magic I prefer I gimmicked items like rope, paper, books, cards etc... Something the audience will be familiar with seeing as an everyday item and not a prop

Drawn in would fit the bill. Its a book and as you read the story the spectators make choices which will determined which page you turn to. At the end of the story they get a spooky surprise.
I think its by Oliver Meech but I don'thave my copy handy at the moment, if you are interested pm me and I will have a look when I get home.
