Inconceivable is a good word for this. Yikes.
Actually, what went thru my mind when we got out there and started coming back was, OMG, I hope we don't make a wrong turn somewhere!!!!!

Don't say "we." I spend a lot of time in other dimensions.

I remember a cartoon of two astronomers under a star studded sky. One is looking at the other in anger and the caption reads; "Yeah? Well they don't make ME feel insignificant, fella!"

Doesn't that make the Universe seem much smaller than it really is?
To grasp the vastness of space, I find it's better to conceptualize mentally, and to study images like those from the Hubble Space Telescope. One of the amazing facts about nebulae is that these are regions of space which contain approximately 1-2 molecules per cubic metre.....very close to a total vacuum. And yet, from billions of miles away, these nebulae can be seen visually as beautiful, multi-coloured plumes of inter stellar gas. Close up, they would be completely invisible. Remember, there are billions of stars in every galaxy, and there are millions of galaxy clusters and superclusters, each containing thousands of galaxies. The Universe is also expanding in all directions at the speed of light. |

One could also ask if space is compact, IE does it have empty spaces?

The "speed of light" thing can't be correct, as the expansion is accelerating.
