I realize that most of you want to show the coin roll as a flourish.
Hm....

McMillan´s roll is different as it is very fast because you spread all the coins at once.
It gives the impression that you grab into the air, grab something, shake your hand so the spectators hear that you have cought something, then wham... four coins between your hands. The advantage is the fast spread that cannot be achived with the other spreads.

Ravi,

The roll down you describe is in "Principles and Deceptions" by Arthur Buckley (1948)

Here is the excerpt from his book describing it:

"THE ROLL DOWN PRODUCTION FOR FOUR COINS

Buckley's Method

This is a spectacular, though quite difficult, sleight to perform. It requires considerable practice, perhaps one hundred hours to do at all well.

A stack of four coins is produced from the Downs' palm, together as one, and placed in position in the left hand, as seen in Fig. 1. The left hand gives an imperceptible upward and downward movement, and four coins are seen between the fingers as in Fig. 5. The sleight is clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 as these photographs were taken with the sleight in progress.

I have seen a similar sleight performed in steps of rolling down two and then rolling each two to make the four. I do not think the latter method compares with the excellence of this method.

The pictures tell the whole story far better than words. It is acquired by feeling and balance as the coins unfold themselves as the photographs depict. Fig. 6 shows the right hand producing the fifth coin and adding it to the four displayed in the left hand. When it is performed as described, it is no longer a juggling feat, but a beautiful illusion of four coins created from one."

I learned the rollout in high school. And to walk a coin. I'm still doing penance for the coin walk thing. Sorry, there's not place for display of skill in my aesthetic.

If you have a slippery Sam set, you can use the coin rollout to effect some nice coin productions.

Using the steeplechase or coin walk as a secret sleight is still not quite in working repertoire for me. Perhaps someday.
