Hi Dannydole my lack of respect towards Dick Oslund is only one individual, I have great respect for many who have come before me .
Respect is earned not inherited Do you think Dick Oslund showed me any respect throughout this thread? Especially with his flippant reply to my original post And like I mentioned before I would not have found what I needed in Tarbell hence the question in the first place. |

I did read part of the books at one point but forgive me if I do not wish to read some 3000 pages 8 volumes on the hope of finding what I needed. A credit card type gimmick effect. Is if I was searching for a method that is a whole different thing and I would find it in there. But I would still come here and ask for advice
What is the magic Café for? If not to ask questions like the one I asked therefore saving time? If every ones answer to a question was read no study Tarbell then it would be a useless forum. Before the internet existed there was no option but to read a book or ask a fellow magi at the local magic club but thankfully the internet has changed the way the world is and how we get information of people don't like the questions that are asked Then the real question is maybe this world of the Internet forums is not for you. If you had quite a bit on and did not have much spare time what would you do? Read books in the hope of finding what you need or come and ask fellow magicians what they think personally I would rather get a collective of ideas Personally I like spending what spare time I have with my wife and two boys |

You make broad assumptions. All I did was ask questions. So are you saying you would rather be told the answer than learn it for yourself?

I took magicshayne's question as one of looking for recommendations. In this vast world of magical knowledge, sometimes it's better to ask for recommendations and then take it from there.
Somehow Dick Oslund chose to give a lecture. There is a similar thread asking what is in one's pockets: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=5 Why didn't Dick contribute similarly to that thread as well? Just wondering?

Wow! What a topic. There are two schools of thought here. The old and the new. I learned from Tarbell and it is great. I have even gone back recently to look for new material. I did not find what I was looking for but I stumbled on something better. That is how I learned magic many moons ago. In the newer generation they have become accustomed to DVD and video libraries. I find myself looking at these many times a day. I too also find great ideas from them as well. Neither way is right or wrong. Tarbell though complete is still an older way of thinking. He did not have the beauty of the technology we have today. I would like to go back to his days and see if I could find a place that could print an authentic looking gimmick card or credit card or something similar to the original posters question. I doubt that a place existed back then besides that big time card companies. I may be wrong though. I only bring it up to make a point that Tarbell is a great foundation but if you do not continually build on that foundation with the techniques and props of today then you will look very stale to the paying public. MagicShayne is not wrong to ask what he did in the beginning of this post. I think that it was a good question. There are no bad questions. If it is relevant to him then it is fair to post here. Danny and Dick have some great points as well. This past weekend I peformed on Saturday for 6 hours (travel included) and 5 and a half hourse on Sunday all at the same restaurant. The last thing I wanted to do after that was pick up another magic anything. There have been some times that I forgot my cards at home and wanted to entertain people and would have loved to have a couple of effects in my wallet to entertain with. I have since built a few that I like (mentioned before in this post) but I could use some new inspiration if I hear it here on the café. I enjoy questions like this and I do not think that the old thought of learning magic is any better than the new thought of learning magic so I think that we all need to get a long and help each other find the magic in our lives.

To be fair Danny has no point nor has taken a position. I was asking questions. I do not think anyone asked or did anything wrong with what they asked. I thought the disrespectful attitude was a bit much. No biggie. Just don't want my position misunderstood.

Danny,
You are one of the guys I get a lot from here. I think that your post have merit and I respect you and your knowledge. I think that behavior breeds behavior and if I didn't know how Dick posts I would react in kind like MagicShayne. Believe me I have had my share of heated discussions here on the Café but have learned in my 1300+ posts that my perspective on how it should be is not always the right way. I have taken my ego out of it and tried to be the most helpful. Recently I have been disappointed with a few products and have shared my disappointment with the members so they can save their hard earned money but if someone disagreed with me I just walked away. This approach has made the café a lot more fun for me and it truly is a place where I can get the best help from the industry I love. Thanks to you and others for your friendship, help and respect. I know from the years of reading your post that you are truly here to help. Patrick Wallace |

Thank you Evildan and Magic Patrick for helping and trying to make things a little more clear, I think sometimes it can turn into a witch hunt and I did feel a little isolated all I wanted was some help lol.
@danydoyle I do think you was about to try and jump on the band wagon and shoot me down in flames (just the way I felt maybe I am wrong) so I am glad other people have relised what is going on here and spoken out and for that guys I thank you. also you say the "disrespectful attitude was a bit much"? can you please clarify as I just re-read through the posts and all I have done is defend my-self. Do you think what Dick wrote was disrespectful? He basically said in his post I am not going to help you go away and read no study Tarbell. he then goes further and in my opinion not just disrespectful but childish in attacking on my English grammar, maybe I am not as educated as dick but should you poke fun at other people who are less fortunate than you? In my opinion the lack of respect has come from Dick Oslund and magic patrick hit the nail on the head (behavior breeds behavior) and all I have done is defend my self Respect is earned not inherited. Thank you evildan for that link I will go and check it |

Holy crap, give the kid a break. I am an old guy and I have asked magicians many times in my life what they carry or what effects they do. Moving on... Magicshane have you thought about the wallet it self? Maybe a Kaps or Himber wallet or a combo wallet?
Dick you may be right in what you are saying but your performance (aka; delivery and timing) was a little off. Maybe you should read, no study, Magic and showmanship by Henning Nelms... OK don't get all worked up I just put that last sentence in there to show you the other side of the coin... Magic is a constant learning experience, does it really matter if you read the information from a book, or get a condensed version form a magician on a forum like this? By the way Magicshane, Entertaining kids is every bit (or more)as difficult or challenging as it is to perform for "educated" audiences - Its not who you preform for, it's the magical moments you create and leave behind... |

If you thought I was going to jump on any bandwagon that was you interpreting very poorly.
I am only going to say this. It is about learning. If someone asks the question you did ans gets a specific answer and you where theb do it have you really "learned" much? Yes it is quick but what have you "learned"? Don't jump on me for I am not attacking. But if you went through Tarbell and absorbed all that and continued to search and absorb before you knew it you have a vast storehouse of knowledge ready to go instead of bits and pieces. Not as quick I readily admit. So yes there is a difference. I am not saying one way is right or wrong. In "Zen In the Art of Archery" the student frustrated by being told he is doing wrong blurted out "why not just tell me what is right?" The master simply said he did jot want to deprive him of the pleasure of learning. This is where my philosophy lies as well. I ask you the question about learning to simply know which you prefer. I now know I can not help you. I am not saying you are wrong mind you.

Thank you greg755 I also agree with your ref to entertaining kids, it is something I do not think I can do and I have great respect for anyone who can do something that I know I cannot do.
With red to the wallet that's a great idea, when working I use a jol large plus wallet but hadn't really thought about a gimmick wallet for when in casual attire and not working that is something I will look into thanks. All the good advice I have been given here far out weighs the bad experience Thank you all |

MagicShayne,

Photo #1 http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm190/BYUDAD/photo3-2.jpg Photo #2 http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm190/BYUDAD/photo2-2.jpg Photo #3 http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm190/BYUDAD/photo1-2.jpg It has the following: - 100 names (stuck to wallet for ease of use see #2 it allows me to open it and hold the wallet) - Burn Notice to reveal the name from 100 names - Powerball 60 - Wonderland Dollar - Test Conditions - The manila envelope has a card in it and the other card in in the special compartment (photo 3) for a prediction effect. - Color Monty - Places for bizz cards (I am out as I handed them out on Sunday) Hope that you enjoy. Good luck on finding the right mix for your wallet. Patrick Wallace |

Thanks magic Patrick I also like how you have organised your sets/acts into ziplocks a great idea mine is nowhere near as organised just all mixed into the case, looks like I got some sorting to do. Sticking the 100 names to the wallet is also a great idea

I am only a hobbyist and don't read but I get great reactions from powerball 60, to-do voodoo, osterlinds slips for name predictions, spin doctor, and 4 aces for Daley's last trick. Good luck |

Sometimes the answer is hidden right under our noses. What do I carry in my wallet to perform with?... Money.

Now that Dick Oslund & Kabbalah has decided to leave me alone thankfully, (shame on them) we can get back on track.
Thank you for all the suggestions I am going to go with Powerball 60 and extended stay I already carry in my wallet Extreme Burn and ace both effects by Richard sanders So the next time I finish a show and having a drink with the MD of the company or booker and when I am not working I will have miracles ready to go that will look impromptu. I cannot thank you all enough for the help you have saved me so much time, time that can be spent with my family :-} |
