Shayne! EFFECTS are what the spectator "sees" or thinks that he "sees". --So! you cannot carry EFFECTS in your wallet! PROPS are what you carry around, to PERFORM a TRICK. I do an ILLUSION in my school assembly program with NO PROP., and the EFFECT is great! The PERFORMER is more important than the PROP!!!
p.s. For more years than I can count, I've gotten along just fine with a TT. --and,I'm not a genius! I suggest that you read, NO! STUDY Tarbell.

The post maybe a little lost in translation but I would hope most people know what I mean.
why is it people come on here for help but just get picked up on un-important things?
I suggest that you read, NO! STUDY Tarbell.
With two Royal Performances under my belt I have most of my material I need whilst I am always open to new ideas and new things but I am what we call a worker and do not have time to read countless books I am to busy trying to make money :-} usually a quick post on a forum people will help you out and saves you hours of searching through books and end up reading 90% of the book to find out that you will not ever use the things you just spent time reading as the effects are not workers for whatever reason (waste of time in my opinion) Things I am looking for is something along the lines of Craig Petty's love cards http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S13149 Gimmicks are credit card size any one know of any other effects/props that use cards in this way Thanks in advance for your help. |

OK...I am back. I had an appointment that I could not miss.
PPS>>> I was a bit "short"m in my comment above. BUT, I'm not "backing off" what I said. I don't know your background, or your experience, but,I think I am safe in inferring that you are at least relatively "new". One of the reasons for existence of this "Café" is to be helpful. One of the Boy Scout Laws is "HELPFUL". I've been a performing magician for 69 years, and a Boy Scout (later Scouter) for 70 years. I plan to continue doing both, --until I get it "right"! One of the first things I say to any person (young or old) who has asked me to mentor, or aat least, give advice to, is: "I CAN'T TEACH YOU ANYTHING. I CAN ONLY HELP YOU LEARN." Learning is an ACTIVE, not a PASSIVE "process". (Sophocles--a "few" millenia ago, said "One learns by DOING the thing.") In casual conversations in a magic shop, one can pick up "bits of knowledge, and occasionally "big chunks" of knowledge! However, one must never confuse KNOWLEDGE with WISDOM! Once again, it's the old Navy "story". A ship is heading out to sea. A grizzled old sailor, and a young lad on his first voyage, are standing at the rail, looking out at the vast ocean. The lad exclaims: "Wow! That's a lot of water, out there!" The old timer replies, with a smile: "What you see, is only the top of it!" I'm happy to help magicians & magician "wannabees", who do their "homework". Come to me with a specific question about a problem, and I will try to be helpful. But, asking the sort of question (and you are certainly not, the first to ask this sort of question)that you ask is much too broad. In essence, you are asking me to do your thinking for you. I'm not a mentalist! --And, remember what Sophocles said! If I were to suggest a specific TRICK for you to do,or PROP for you to carry, it would be somewhat like giving you a pair of my old shoes. (I wear size 11, and prefer shoe laces, and you may wear size 8 and prefer velcro fasteners! What I "wear" (shoes) and "do" (tricks) will not necessarily "fit" you (and your personality)! For about 40 years, when I lectured around the country, I would begin by asking the group: "How much magic do you own?" I got a gezillion different answers: "A trunk full, a basement full, a suitcase full, ETC." When I said, "NO! You don't (and can't)own any magic!" I got all sorts of "funny" looks, in response. When I further explained (by defining terms) I had a very attentive audience! Michael Baker, one of the "old timers" in the Café, told me, years later, that he had totally changed his thinking about magic, after I explained things. (My lecture, as you may gather from this "tirade" is not just a collection of trick explanations.) "Those who think tricks are 'everything",are strangers to magic. Tricks are simply the residue that's left, after the real essence of magic is gone." (I'm paraphrasing S.L.Sharpe,who is wiser than I, but that's the "gist" of what he wrote.) Credentials::: I haven't kept count of how MANY lectures, I have done. I have lectured at the Magic Castle (twice) at several National Conventions, and a whole bunch of regional conventions, plus Rings & Assemblies from coast to coast and border to border. (Canada, too). Many of those rings & assemblies have had me "back", and some more than twice! I made a living for most of my life, performing for "real people",not just magicians, mostly in school assemblies (Kindergarten thru High Schools --and colleges. I broke in as a teen, doing magic and fire eating in several side shows. I've done (locsl) TV in Chicago (BOZ0) and other areas. Club dates? --yes. Trade shows? --a few, busking? --a little, worked in magic shops? --four, magic conventions (national and regional) a bunch. I've "paid my dues"! Back to the "tirade":::I vividly remember,FRED KAPS, lecturing in '74 at the Boston SAM convention. He was explaining a rather simple trick, and he used a basic term (like "thumb p**m"). Someone raised a hand, and when Fred acknowledged him, the man asked, "What's a "thumb P**m?" Fred paused for a brief moment, and then replied (somewhat impatiently) "Don't you read??? The "thumb P**m" is one of the first sleights in Tarbell?" Fred, then continued his lecture. So, let me continue with a more detailed definition of terms. You cannot buy or own, MAGIC. You cannot buy or own a TRICK, or an EFFECT. You can buy and/or own a SECRET, or a PROP. Using a PROP and/or a SECRET, you can PERFORM a TRICK. A TRICK, like music, only exists while it is being performed! (When you stop dragging the horse hair over the catgut, the music stops!) If you perform the trick well, with a good PRESENTATION, the MAGIC will probably happen, (because of what the spectator has seen, or thinks he has seen--the EFFECT) NOT ON THE STAGE, but, IN THE SPECTATOR'S MIND. MAGIC is NOT INHERENTLY ENTERTAINING!!! The PERFORMER AND HIS PRESENTATION are what make magic entertaining. I REPEAT; MAGIC IS NOT INHERENTLY ENTERTAINING So, please don't ask a "BROAD (SHOT GUN") QUESTION. Do a bit of your own reearch, first. Example: "I've been looking for a really funny card trick that would be suitable for casual, close up situations. I would like the effect to be visual, and the props visible. I would like the effect to be versatile, (good for almost any age group). It needs to be angle proof, and need little or no set up, preferably, but not necessarily needing a table. It should be "pocket portable" and need nothing but the cards. I saw MIKO advertised in Abbott's catalog. It looks good to me, but a dollar is a lot right now, and I don't want to buy a prop that wont fit my needs. Can anyone help me? I could give you a very good comment or answer to your question. Yes, it's visual, the props (six playing cards and a "douse" (singular of dice! hee hee)are certainly visible to a small group (half dozen spectators). It's definitely versatile --elementary school kids to senior citizens. It requires no sleights, and there are no angles to worry about. No set up is needed, and it could be instantly repeatable, but for a different audience, as the climax is funny (and fools 'em) but wouldn't be funny for the same group if repeated. It "needs" a surface to lay the six cards on. The six cards will fit in an average wallet, and the douse in a pocket. A dollara is cheap for what you get! (i.e. props, secret) and also the effect it has on your spectators. I hope this has been HELPFUL.

PPPS: Well, I've never worked for ROYALTY, so I guess I've just wasted my time. YOU, apparently, don't feel a need to know the principles of magic.
Hell,I just remembered! I DID work for the King of Sweden at a National Jamboree of the B.S.A. back in 1981. So,there! (That was a "glove" in your face!)

Great way for a "rising star", "worldwide", "one of the top close up magician's[sic]" to make friends.
Mr. Oslund has tried to educate you and all you can do is insult him. I hope that one day, you will appreciate the difference between real advice and crap. I doubt it though.

For your information, magicshayne, High Schools are NOT "KID" SHOWS. --and COLLEGES are NOT "KID" SHOWS EITHER. If you think that a carnival side show is a "KID" SHOW, you have another think coming. I worked them when I was a teenager, and a few years ago, I MANAGED a GIRL TO GORILLA ILLUSION SHOW.
BTW: I DO not perform KIDDIE TRICKS. I CANNOT PERFORM KIDS EFFECTS. I defined the term EFFECT for you, but I used words of more than one syllable. Quote:

You don't bother to write "I" would like to', and you don't bother to end the ?sentence? with a period. "But" is normally followed by a comma, and your declarative clause somehow becomes a question! My English Rhetoric Professor would have flunked you posthaste, --(as they say in Great Britain.) Your final "sentence" begins with a lower case letter (English normally uses a CAPITAL letter). Plus, you end that thought, again, with no punctuation (except a apace) "thank you" also begins without a capital letter, but it does finish with two dots. One more dot, and it would considered an ellipsis. Maybe English is not your native language. If that is the case, I can understand. I also understand dyslexia. The pastor of my church is dyslexic, but he has no problem using correct English. Mary Mowder, who is the unofficial greeter in our new arrivals forum, is dyslexic, but she does not make mistakes in grammar. Does the educational system in the United Kingdom offer remedial English grammar?

Thank you Motown I have not seen extended stay before it looks great looks like I have found what I need :-}
@Dick Oslund Thank you for pointing out the obvious with regards to my English grammar yes it is very poor I know. I did not have the luxury of a great education as a child to due to certain circumstances later in life I had an option end up in prison or join the armed forces so I joined the Parachute Regiment which is the same as the USA Airborne Division, Not much call for English grammar there I'm afraid. An injury whilst serving caused me not to be able to walk for 2 years that is when I studied magic again not much call for English Grammar, later I was medically discharged for HM Forces and started out as a magician again I am not booked on my English grammar thankfully. To that end Dick Oslund what I am trying to say is I am on a forum that helps other magicians as long as my writing is eligible I do not see the problem and it is rather Childish I would expect more from you If this was an English grammar forum then I would understand your points but as I see it you are just trying to take cheap shots. |

You are certainly welcome to your OPINION regarding English grammar.
Being able to communicate clearly, is a basic skill in performing. Magic IS a performing art. Educated people may not comment directly, but they certainly notice a faux pas when they hear or see it. After Quentin's comment, I looked at your web site. For heaven's sake, if YOU can't write a few sentences without spelling and punctuation errors, hire it done. If I were a client looking for what you offer, I would be looking elsewhere. I started out trying to help someone, who appeared to be in need of it, but it soon became evident that that someone is only interested in tricks. There is a lot more to performing magic than tricks. Do you know the difference between 'dhildish' and 'childlike'? I would suggest that you avail yourself of a good dictionary. BTW; It's not "eligible" (at least you managed to apell that correctly) it's LEGIBLE. I'm ignoring your poor attempts at insults. I'm considering the source.

Hi Montana 76 sorry I somehow missed your post but I just looked through I think it is a clever idea and thank you for sharing it :-}.
@ Dick Oslund Thank you once again for the cheap shots agreed my website might not be to every ones liking but at least I am brave enough to publish the website in my profile, I did check yours when we first posted on here and it was (domain expired)? now you have removed it from your profile a quick google of your name also brings up nothing apart from a couple of threads you have been performing for 69 years and only 2 threads on google WOW I do not know how that is possible you must be doing GREAT. So! you noticed the "typo"! Wonderful! You are improving already! --but, IMHO, you have a bit more "distance" to travel.
I started in the business most likely before your parents were born. I never had a need for a web site--my manager handled that business. So, obviously, I could not remove what never existed. I don't give a tinker's dam about google. I'm retired, very comfortably, thank you. Now, I'm also busy, I tried to be helpful to someone who appeared to need help. It's rather obvious that you don't want any help from me. That's fine.
