Last night I had the blessing to share at a privates party held in a
Fraternal order of Police Building. The audience was made of men and women in recovery Recovery time ranged from a few days to 40 years. Some say addiction is like trying to fill a God sized whole with Drugs, alcohol, gambling, shopping or pornography. (Etc, etc ... ) From my version of Hendrix's Star-Spangled Banner to my Strait Jacket routine, while sharing Autobiography in 5 short chapters by Portia Nelson, the group gave me smiles and Hope for people struggling with that disease. Love and prayers Brother Harris

Last night heard if the death of Robjn Williams.
Our Lord can work through Counselors, Doctors, Pastors, Friends and yes even The Magic Café. Many people facing addiction , even those that are clean still face difficult emotions. Sometimes the still suffering addict is not the one strung out on drugs or alcohol it is the one sitting across from us, on a media screen Or on this Café. Sometimes Christians and others feel the stigma of seeking Mental Health support. Getting help does not mean we don't have faith. Many of the real people in the Bible faced real human issues. May God continue to use you according to His plan. Whether it is tremendous success, chronic pain or chronic depression our Lord Loves you. Love and prayers Brother Harris

Very, very, incredibly sad about Robin Williams. My guess is, and this is only a complete guess, he could have slept off the Jack Daniels and hopefully sought out a counselor today.
The good ole JD often makes folks "crazy": so in that drunken stupor combined with depression, everything gets totally blown out of proportion in one's mind. Feelings of being totally alone and worthless surface. "Bad drunks" if you will: some get angry, while others get withdrawn, bitter and slip into a hopeless black hole of reality blindness. Just so very, very tragic- I just wish someone had been there with him to urge him just to just sleep it off (those struggling with alcohol often isolate themselves). He admitted taking lots of drugs over the years, but his biggest ongoing struggle as of the last few years (per what he told reporters) was just not being able to stop drinking. Alcohol abuse has a horribly high destructive price tag with it, which always seems, eventually, to require a nasty final payment in full. |

I read that his wife did in fact leave the home in the morning, but since they were in different rooms, she never checked up on him when she left earlier in the morning. Then he was found dead by his personal assistant before noon. So very sad. Time of death may be reviewed in this tragedy, they will be trying to determine if he was under the influence of a substance at the time of death or not. If he was, then they need to try to determine if he took it voluntarily or not.
Just seems so tragic, a man with such talent losing his life to depression. That being said, I think people in general attempt to comfort themselves with expressions such as "now he is making God laugh." (See article on the Christianity Today web site). |

We all can comfort ourselves,(from alcohol -humor or even chocolate cake), while only the real comforter was sent by Jesus.
Sometimes it is not the gospel illusions I share, it is my words spoken from my heart that seem to touch my audience members. Currently prepping for a talk and program based on 3 John 1 Love and prayers Brother Harris

Yes, very sad news about Robin Williams.
Some people are surprised when I tell them that I have never knowingly imbibed an alcoholic beverage in my life. My reason? One is that I never met an alcoholic who took his or her first drink with their goal to be an alcoholic. As former NBA star and present NBA analyst Charles Barkley recently stated, "Drugs and alcohol are undefeated. When you get involved with drugs and alcohol it's matter of when it's going to get you." I understand the power of God to deliver a person, but I think Barkley certainly gives all of us something to think about, especially in a day when Christians and alcohol are mixing more and more.

I'm celebrating 23 years since my own baptism and freedom from alcohol.
In a sense, we are all in recovery from selfishness, greed, lust, and pride, so we all need daily help and daily victory: one day at a time.
