As you know (probably) I specialize in Theatrical/Bizarre/Story Magic so:
Serious Question (please read it all before joining the conversation) --I’d like to compile a list of “IMPOSSIBLE Magic” that evokes wonder and awe (details below.) --I’m hoping for a thoughtful LIST, NOT a discussion or theory. --Of course some magicians can make ANY effect seem magical, so there is not black-and-white, this is a subjective listing. --So, an audience hopefully has a “suspension” of their logic at our shows. --Of course later they may try to revere engineer our method. --That agreed, there are “good” tricks, “powerful” tricks, and just “no way!” tricks. --The latter are to lay people (and sometimes to US) pure amazement and astonishment. --They defy explanation and can make us really BELIEVE in Magic for the moment. --Hippity Hop Rabbits and Dove Pans do NOT do this for adults. --I think the “Hang ‘em High” rope though body CAN be, when done by the right performer, as my example. --WHAT do YOU feel are one or two “truly inexplicable” pieces of Strong Magic? --THANKS for reading carefully! WHY this question? Due to severe arthritis developing in both thumbs, and the way my broken wrist is healing, it is very likely that I won’t be able to perform the Losander Table any longer. My own version (very different from Losanders btw) to my audiences is powerful, kick-ass, magic, it is constantly talked about. Out of my full evening show there are about 3 pieces that are of this A+ list caliber. My strong belief is that I, and other magicians, could have 75 minutes of only kick-ass, jaw dropping, inexplicable magic in our shows. This shared list is to begin that process for others who would like the same goal. Magically, Walt |

Walt, here's hoping you get a better reply here than at Full Circle Magic
I think Pulse Stop qualifies, as well mind reading using invisible compromise that reveals something personal to the participant. |

PK Touch, with a powerful script and performance ! IMHO

I perform a lot of impossible card tricks (and more). Among them, I've my favorites: the One Second Memorized Deck and Sixte.
Sixte is absolutely impossible to reconstruct, before anything else, it's a magician's fooler and the same time very funny to perform for lay audience. No one could never find the solution. Let's resume what happens: - An enveloppe is placed on the table. - The spectator may use his own deck of cards or choose one among a lot of different brands (but it's better if you borrow the cards) - He shuffles the cards and removes all the cards from 1 to 6 of hearts, in any order. (On the video, I remove the cards but the spectator may do that him/herself. - He throws a die several times to verify that the die is not loaded, then throws a last time. - the card under the packet matches the number. In the video, the number is 4. - in this case, the fourth card is reversed in the spread and the cards are placed in this position on the table. - the enveloppe is opened, the cards are removed and spread on the table. - the same card is reversed in the same position. and the back of the card matches the back of the borrowed deck. here's the routine in French. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPCyKtZgccA |

Another "impossible to reconstruct" routine is Zodiac, in Capricornian Tales. Simply because there's no mechanical explanation to the fact that you can find a birthdate.
Other routines like Paradise Lost are so special, that no one desire to reproduce them, to many complex actions in a row, plus no reason to reproduce because the story is the real fascinating thing. A routine like "the One Second Memorized Deck" is very difficult to reconstruct (but not impossible), but won't be copied because is extremely difficult on a technical point of vue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBU0T-PYi6g But the top of the iceberg in impossibility is SIXTE. The concepts involved are unique, personal and unpublished. Remember: I only perform my own material, I don't steal or perform anyone else's routine. The routines I perform are constructed to fool magicians and entertain lay people and even kids. Plus, it's very difficult, if not impossible, to find similar items for the kind of bizarre magic I do. Hope this helps Walt! |

Thank you, Brynmore14, I permanently withdrew from Full Circle Magic as a result of the unnecessary and inappropriate flack, frenzy, and flames.

Christian! I’d totally forgotten Zodiac from Capricornian Tales.
I don’t work with cards myself and specialize in Parlor. Yes! I do not ever steal and don’t perform published material as it is. Original is the key to magic I think. That said, this request for a list is a search for effects and methods that can be creatively re-worked. I also lean to unfamiliar items in my theatrical magic. Thanks for your ideas! Godzilla, Thank you for mentioning the PK Touch. It is indeed powerful. My presentation is very involved with a detailed story, I may consider rethinking the effect. Magically, Walt

Some of you have mentioned items that are mentalism and mindreading. Very interesting.
I think some mentalism crosses over as magic and some magic crosses over as mentalism. But not all, and I’m very aware that I concentrate on magic and not mindreading (that is why PK will work for me.) Thank you so much for this list, and presenting it as a list. I hope it grows. Magically, Walt |

I do magic but specifically try not to disect the tricks that initially amaze me that I see others do. Kind of like not wanting to know who or what is in the Mickery Mouse costume at Disneyland...I much prefer to retain the magic. Of course since I've been around the game a long time, many 'tricks' reveal themselves without trying to think too hard. A long way to get to the answer to your Q...but the ONE trick that floored me and continues to, when I see the video and have NO CLUE (nor did I want one) is the video from Japan of the performer (Cyril Takayama) reaching INTO (through the glass) of a large aquarium and pulling the hand out again of an un 'damaged' tank with a signed card.
There is a video on youtube purporting to have the explaination (I won't watch it). But this trick is truly a show stopper if you can manage it. IMO. Good luck overcoming those physical challenges my friend.

Sorry to be late to the party. Just off the top of my head: For me, OLEC is ne of those classical, just WOW, effects. I've been in love with it since seeing Richardi perform it when I was a boy. On the darker side, Needle Through Arm. It looks so clean and impossible, the needle and the bare arm. It also allows for interaction with the audience. Card Warp can also fit your scenario. I think of Eugene's tale done with 2 jumbo cards. It too looks clean, especially at the end, leaving no explanation. And it is wonderful, for the right story. Tony |

Walt since you are expecting the loss of a levitation perhaps a lighter object than the table could be considered.
Bill Abbot's "The Thing" is quite light and requires similar choreography. Losander himself has several smaller items, books and boxes that also "float." |

A while ago a Post of mine about compiling a list of “A and A+ adult parlor magic,” caused a great deal of confusion, miscommunication, and flaming... on several Facebook forums.
I was very happy with the response here on the Café. These are (for me and me only!) the best of what I found, and I wanted to share my list with those who were kind and participated with my request. 1. Starkle (Dan Harlan) 2. No Tear #2 (Newspaper Tear) 3. Javelin (Tossed Out Deck) 4. Mexican Rope/SEO (Linking Ropes) 5. Ring and Rope (El Duco) 6. Epic Wonder (Mental Epic) 7. Word in a Million (Book Test) 8. YES Michael, Jay's Symphony Ring on Ribbon is wonderful. Thanks fo helping me recall it!
As for Zombie being "A List" yes, it certainly can be, I hope mine is, but it can easily be "d" list, so it's not on my list. |
