Until some serious news hype causes a downward blip which then triggers the automated sells which then becomes a buy opportunity for the financial moguls which starts the cycle over again. Of course this is an opportunity for those short term investors with the time and money to recognize them and take advantage while the long term investors hold their breath as world and national events continuously unfold.

There's no question that the stock market has gone up incredibly from where it was in 2008 despite upward and downward "blips."

I credit Obama for the better economic times. I think also, part of wealth or riches, is not just being an intelligent investor, but also being an intelligent owner once you do own individual stocks. You know, I think another great book would be "The Intelligent Owner." You can't just be good at investing, but you also have to be good at owning too. Lobo, what were those Merril Lynch books you wanted to recommend if you don't mind me asking?

If you had a long term investment portfolio in 2007 based upon the DJIA, it took until last year for you to break even, all things being equal. Timing is everything.

Personally, as of right now, I simply invest in index funds as most people here already know. So, I think a better strategy, if you are an index fund investor is not to time the market, rather, just practice dollar cost averaging or invest something every month. Over the long term, you efficiently buy more shares when the stock market is down, less shares when the stock market is up and yet will still make money over the long term. It's pretty simple and easy to understand. Plus, you can't just can't consider capital appreciation, but also dividend payouts which, judging the performance of my portfolio, seems to help hedge against the volatility of the stock market. I would like to buy some individual stocks, but I want to practice picking individual stocks without using real money for a year or two to judge when I am ready to put real money at risk investing in individual stocks.

"Some" can indicate any number and doesn't mean either "Most" or "only a few." It encompasses both.

General_Magician, I am using timing as the only true indicator of how a person can judge how they did over time and not necessarily as an investment strategy. Proponents of the stock market can use time periods in many different ways to make a point. All assume you will live and invest forever and not have to sell or have sold your portfolio at the bottom of a cycle. Imagine the case they can make by saying if you bought stock in 2008 this is how much you would be worth today, which would be true, but only for those that bought then. In addition, that's assuming you picked the right stocks or funds. Timing can be an investment strategy when things appear to be at their worst as it will offer the most opportunity for significant gains on sound selections.
