China Uncensored is kind of like The Daily Show, but about China. It's awesome.

Fyi, I consider myself fairly conservative.

I found the story of Gao really interesting as I haven't heard of him before.

Thanks Critter.

No problem. I found the site because I was doing research on Falun Gong for my cult psych class. The page has a pretty good series on the group.

Falun Gong members used to hold vigils outside the Chinese Embassy here in NYC. They may still do so. They would enact scenes of torture and imprisonment complete with gruesome posters.

They also had (have?) a weekly newspaper I forget the name, maybe something like The Epoch which at first glance seems like a pretty interesting international newspaper, but without fail always had an anti-China article somewhere on page three or four.

I think much of their criticism of the Chinese justice system and government is warranted; OTOH, I get the sense that there is another (hidden) agenda going on, and I get the sense that they have a lot of financial backing, perhaps from Korean intelligence like the Moonies had.

Let me know if I can help out with any of your research from here.

Yeah I was involved with Falun for a short time. The leader definitely has some serious issues but the persecution is also very real and horrific. I use that module to encourage some critical thinking from the students, applying what was learned in the first half of the quarter.

Nice. What aspects of your course did you find the students responded to the most?

They seemed to like the part on Jonestown the best. My favorite parts to teach were the influence tactics and the unit on the spiritualist movement.

Every cult case study had a reason. Jones used a little of everything so he was the lynchpin between tactics and case studies. The Spiritualists were to demonstrate how little the cognitive shortcuts exploited by cult leaders have changed. Falun was to employ critical thinking to decide if they are a dangerous cult, political victims, or both. Man, I love teaching.

Sounds like a great course. How did you come to teach it?

Thanks. My primary pscyh interest is social influence but we already had that class so I wrote this curriculum so I could show the principles in an interesting framework.
