Hi guys!
I've recently been or king on a finger ring and shoe string routine for close up. I'm looking for a knot that when tied over the ring and pulled, the ring gets releases. I can't find it in any of my notes or Daryl DVDs but have seen it once. Can anybody help or point me in the right direction? Cheers! |

I'm not sure what you want but if you push a loop through a ring and make another loop and tie the two loops in an overhand knot the ring will appear to be tied in the string.
If you pull on the ends the ring will fall off. I don't know how you could get into that position magically. -Mary Mowder |

There is a method on Colombini's "Ring and Rope" DVD that would work though the final move will be bit more difficult, easily masked by handling the ends to a couple of spectators. Essentially it is the famous ShoeLace Knot effect done with a ring.
I believe it is "Escape" by Jim Laconte

If I understand the OP, it appears to be the late Jim Ryan's use of the G.W. Hunter "Shoelace" Knot. Jim used a soft rope and a pencil. He got the ring off the rope and onto the pencil.

I did not read the thread but this thread deals with the effect Dick mentioned. Jim Ryan's Ring, Rope, & Rod.

On Aug 20, 2014, Mary Mowder wrote: Mary! The first link, of course, is a thread with many comments on Jim's routine. Nothing really technical is discussed. The second link is Aldo, doing a variation on the old coin (in this case, ring)penetration thru a silk. I can't remember the "name" of the specific trick...I'll check Tarbell, and report back. Once the ring is "outside", the stick is inserted "thru the ring", and the bundled silk is wrapped around the stick. When unwrapped, the silk falls, and the ring is on the stick. I worked with Aldo about 15 or 20 years ago (Midwest Jubilee--St. Louis, I think). He was fun to work with. I did a 'DIG' through my road file last night, and found the Ryan routine in the NEW PHOENIX, VOL I, #4 September 1950 -- the issue is also numbered #337. (The NEW PHOENIX, under the publishership and editorship of Jay Marshall, Esq.) If this is of interest to you, PM me.

Scott Guinn also teaches Jim Ryan's "Rope, Ring and Rod" routine in his ebook "Symphony for Ring and String". WIthout photos or illustrations the tying of the knot isn't exactly crystal clear, but you can comprehend it with a few readings.

I amend my earlier post -- it is Eddy Joseph's "Hindu Ring Mystery" that uses the ShoeLace knot on the Colombini DVD

Hey guys...
In my post to Mary Mowder above, I mentioned that Jim Ryans' "Rope,Ring, and Rod" is in the PHOENIX (see post to Mary for Phoenix number and date) There is a page and a half of hand drawn pictures (by Jasper Marshall, himself!) I remember Jim doing it. (It was GOOD!)

Ryan's Rope, Ring and Rod does have a way to tie a rope around a ring, and you can just pull the ring off while others are holding the ends of the rope.
This "knot" is the same as in Eddie Joseph's Hindu Ring Mystery, and as stated by funsway, it is(at least appears to be) a variation on a shoelace knot. Both of these items can be found in The Ency of Rope Tricks, p324, or in The Craft of Magic(Pecor)p118 A different approach is to disguise a hitch knot - Metal Ring on a string Tarbell 1 p137 includes this method as part of a different effect - Visible Melt Off: V2 of Daryl's Expert Rope Magic - Release-oring p327 of Ency of Rope - Block of Wood Release, Tarbell V8 p 168, or similar, Wholesale Ring Removal p318 Ency of Rope - see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufUQWxKNw1w A very different approach is in "ring tied" in D Edwards online allmagic.comMagicshow. The knot is tied in a way that you are able to pull the ring down the length of the rope, and it looks like the ring penetrates the knot.

I think we all owe G. W. Hunter, a big thank you for introducing the principle of the shoelace knot! He also, of course, gave us the "impossible knot". Many of us have used these gems for a life time. Karrell Fox once did a whole auto show tour with a piece of rope--and a slight addition to to Hunter's impossible knot!
That "leprechaun", Jim Ryan, also gets a deep bow for his adaptation of Hunter's shoelace knot! Charlie Miller, almost 40 years ago, tipped me to a neat way of copping a ring from an OVERHAND KNOT. (The ring had to be slid off the end of the rope, but gave me "one more option" for ring on stick. Then Flip Hallema passed along an easier way to load the ring on the wand. Grismer helped, too! It's nice to have friends. Much of my act uses "generic" props. A rope, a ring, a silk (or two) a few coins, a tin can,a small ball (or two) and I can MAKE A LIVING! --Almost every prop that I carry can "double" or even "triple". The school show also has a mutilated parasol, 3 linking rings, a Trouble Wit, etc. They add flash, but the SIMPLE little generic props "carry" the show.
